Daniel Hass Obituary

Daniel "Dan" Hass

Algoma - Daniel "Dan" Hass, 68, a retired U.S. Air Force Colonel, of Algoma, Wisconsin, died on August 27, 2018, following a boating accident in Alaska.

Dan was born on February 2, 1950, and grew up in Ellison Bay, Wisconsin. He later moved with his family to Neenah where he graduated from high school in 1968. Dan graduated from Michigan State University in 1972, and was then commissioned into the U.S. Air Force as an Accounting and Finance Officer. He obtained a law degree from Drake University in 1980 and became a Staff Judge Advocate for the Air Force. Dan led a distinguished 26-year career as an Air Force officer, serving tours throughout the U.S., Europe, and the Middle East. He was awarded the Legion of Merit, Meritorious Service Medal with 4 oak leaf clusters, Air Force Commendation Medal, National Defense Service Medal, and the Armed Forces Expeditionary Medal. Upon retirement from active duty in 1998, Dan continued his career as a civilian attorney with the Air Force for 12 years and NATO in Luxembourg for 2 years. Dan had numerous accomplishments which included opening the Air Force legal office at NATO Headquarters in Brussels, Belgium, and securing the multibillion-dollar C-17 NATO contract for the Air Base near Budapest, Hungary.

Dan was a down-to-earth guy with a great sense of humor. He loved bird hunting with Gus, fishing anytime anywhere, deer hunting, Chuck's smoked fish, Jim Beam, freshly baked cookies with a glass of milk, and hanging out Sunday mornings at the gun club… not necessarily in that order. Most of all, he loved his wife and two daughters.

Dan is greatly missed by his wife of 46 years, Sue (Hathaway) Hass, their two daughters, Gretchen and Katie Hass, and his four-legged son, Gus, who is waiting patiently for Dan to come home and take him bird hunting. Dan is also survived by his sister Nancy (Denny) Hendrickson, brother Bob (Ginny) Hass, sister Jane (Bill) Wagner, sister-in-law Suzi Hass, five cousins, and several nieces and nephews. Dan was predeceased by his parents, Herman and Irene (Frea) Hass and brother Greg Hass.

A memorial service with military honors will be held on November 10th at 1:00 PM at SCHINDERLE FUNERAL HOME, 1600 Schinderle Lane, Algoma. Immediately following, all are invited to a celebration of Dan's life at the Black Ash Gun Club, E5108 W Wilson Rd, Algoma. Some of Dan's family members and friends have died of cancer and it would be Dan's wish that in lieu of flowers, donations be made to the Cancer Research Institute, 29 Broadway, 4th Floor, New York, NY 10006-3111 or www.cancerresearch.org.

Dan was my boss at RAF Upper Heyford, in the UK, in the late 80s. He was a good guy, a talented lawyer, mentor, officer, leader, and friend. He cared about every single person he worked with. He encouraged collegiality and camaraderie. There were office bowling nights at RAF Croughton, (photo below) Christmas Pantomime with the Crowne Prosecution, and the JAG fun run. When a trial ran late and I was holding up the bus ready to go to a medieval dinner theater, Dan held the bus until I could get on board. Another guy would have told me to drive over after the trial was finished, but that wasn't Dan's way. I didn't know him for a long time, but I'm glad I knew him. These lessons I learned, by the example he set, have stayed with me all these years and I was a better lawyer, and am a better man, because of knowing him. He was a great guy. I miss him.

Please accept my condolences and may my prayers help comfort you, and hasten the journey of your husband Daniel Haas as his soul is received in heaven. May our Lord God bless and comfort you and your family during this time of grief. Please accept my sincere condolences.

I did not know Daniel or his name until today, but I did see what a brave man he was .

I am a Kenai Peninsula resident, a sports fishing woman. It just so happened that Daniel Haas and his two companions where in their boat near my fishing hole on the kenai river in this rural area at the same time.

It was a day that I will never forget. Viewing these three very brave men in a bad situation.
They seen me, I seen them, I heard them, I hope they heard me. I worked as fast as I could.

During my call to 911, I was able to get to a man with a boat and let him know there were three men in the water two hanging on the capsized boat. One in the water no life jackets.

The rural community working at its best in a dire strait situation. You must know we Alaskans that were involved in trying to save these men did everything that we could.

I am so very sad and sorry for your loss. I know the feeling. I have two daughters also.

Sometimes God needs another Guardian angel. Daniel Haas I seen had a face of an Angel . He was one of the few chosen now getting his wings. You must be such a proud wife to have had such a wonderful Brave husband.

Please feel free to contact me, if there is anything that I can do to comfort.

Sincerely Mrs R. S. McCurdy of kasilof Alaska.

I would like to extend my deepest condolences to the Haas family. Col Haas was my boss when we were stationed in Arlington, Virginia in 1996, in the Torts and Litigation Division. He was truly a wonderful gentleman and superior judge advocate, and a pretty good golfer. He was a pleasure to work forone of the best bosses I had in my career. Dan was truly one of the good guys. I met Dan in 1991, when he was my boss at the RAF Upper Heyford. We'd always have a 15-minute early morning huddle in his office and it was always collegial. Dan had a light leadership touch and knew how to get the best out of people. He'd come to the bar on Fridays and alway bought a round. He was respectful of everybody and as fine a gentleman as I've ever met in my 20-year career. Whenever I held staff meetings, I always channeled my inner Dan Haas and conducted them exactly the same way. He had a profound impact on my life and career and I'm very glad to have known him, and am very saddened at his loss.

God Bless you.

As I mentioned to one of my Defense Acquisition University (DAU) colleagues yesterday in an e-mail, I first met Dan when he was serving our nation as a AF civilian lawyer working USAF Int'l Acquisition Programs at NATO. I quickly discovered he was an outstanding guy as well as one of the best DoD int'l acquisition lawyers I've ever had the pleasure to work with. His work at NATO on complex and challenging initiatives such as NATO Alliance Ground Surveillance, NATO C-17 Strategic Airlift Capability, NATO AWACS, and NATO Agency Reform led to the establishment of all of these capabilities. Thanks to Dan's efforts, the US and its NATO allies have the systems they need to keep us all safe in a dangerous world. Moreover, he also took the time to guest lecture at DAU to share his knowledge and experience with the next generation of DoD Int'l Acquisition professionals. We will miss you Dan, but we'll always remember you! Heartfelt condolences to all of his close family and friends in your time of sorrow. Will keep Dan (and all of you) in our thoughts and prayers.
