RICHARD MENSCH Obituary

MENSCH, RICHARD EDWIN "DICK" 76 - of Egg Harbor Township, died peacefully on January 7, 2010 surrounded by his family after a lengthy battle with Parkinson's Disease. Dick was born in 1933 in Marienville, PA to the late John Edwin and Violet Adele Mensch. After graduating from Marienville High School, Dick enlisted in the US Air Force and served during the Korean Conflict as an Airman First Class servicing and maintaining Airborne Reconnaissance and Gun Cameras. After leaving the Air Force, he worked for Marienville Containers, and then graduated from the Allegheny Technical Institute in Pittsburgh, PA. He then moved to Baltimore, MD where he worked for Westinghouse and, while in Baltimore, met Donna. Dick and Donna then moved to Newark, OH where Dick enjoyed his work at the Newark Air Force Base in the Aerospace Guidance and Metrology Center, Industrial Laboratory Division with the Inertial Guidance and Calibration Group. From Newark, Dick moved his family to Cedar Rapids, IA for two years to work for the Department of Defense at Collins Radio with the Defense Contract Administration Service (DCAS). The final move was to Egg Harbor Township where Dick spent the remainder of his career working for the Federal Aviation Administration in the Flight Inspection Field Office as an Airborne Electronic Technician, a job Dick truly enjoyed as he was surrounded by airplanes! Retirement, in 1994, however, afforded them the opportunity to spend most of their time in the town Dick loved the most, Marienville, PA. While in Marienville, Dick could often be found walking down over the hill to Salmon Creek, sitting out on the porch enjoying the peace and quiet as well as taking those unforgettable rides through the woods. Dick was a member of the VFW Post #1424 and the Masons of the Mount Herman Lodge of Cedar Rapids, IA. He was also a member of the Ancient Accepted Scottish Rite of the Masons of the Valley of Central Jersey. Dick is survived, and will be greatly missed, by his wife of 44 years, Donna Lee (Bennett) Mensch; one daughter, Elaine (Chuck) Super and three sons; Bob (Nancy), John (Madeline), Mark (Jill), all of Egg Harbor Township; his grandchildren, Casey, Jennifer and Bradley Super, Billy and Alexandra Mensch and Riley and Gavin Mensch as well as his sister Marie (Chuck) Baxter of Marienville, PA and his brother Bruce (Marilyn) Mensch of Valencia, PA; as well as his in-laws, nieces and nephews. A memorial service will be held at the Zion United Methodist Church, 652 Zion Road, Egg Harbor Township, on Saturday, January 16th at 5 pm, immediately followed by a visitation where the family will receive friends until 7 pm. As Dick will be laid to rest in his hometown, his family will receive friends from 6 to 8 pm Monday, January 11th, and 9 to 11 am Tuesday, January 12th at the Ronald McDonald Funeral Home, 140 Cherry Street, Marienville, PA. Funeral services will be held at 11 am Tuesday in the funeral home with the Reverend Boyd Edmondson officiating. Interment will be in the North Forest Cemetery. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to a charity of one's choice.

We met Dick when we became a neighbor in Marienville. we would see him walking all the time. We got to be friends at the nursing hime his Mom was in. He was always polite and we really got to know him and Donna. We will be sadden at his passing.

I first met Dick when he was probably about twelve years old, not long after his father passed away. One afternoon when Chuck and I were in Marienville for a visit, we took a bunch of the kids to Cook Forest for an outing. We decided to stop at a quaint little place for lunch. Dick ws very mature and responsible for a twelve year old, and he was determined to pay for his and Bruce's lunch. As most of you who remember Chuck know, there was no way he would let Dick pay. Dick scowled and tried very hard to give Chuck the money. He took his role as head of the house very seriously! Dick was always very fastidious about his table manners and cleanliness. We often tell the story when Grammy was mixing meatloaf with her hands, Dick asked her if she washed her hands before she did that. Grammy answered him saying, "No, but I'll wash them when I'm through because that's when they will need it." Chuck and Dick were good friends, and they shared conservative ideas. Chuck and Dick enjoyed political discussions. Our family always loved Dick and respected him for the unique individual that he was. Helen Hoover

Dick was a special guy to me. Dick was my second cousin. I did not get to know Dick until we were both older. He was a kind and gentle soul. My Father was Dick's first cousin. When I first met Dick I felt as if I was in my dad's presence. They were so much alike in many was. I shared a walk with Dick down to Salmon Creek, On the walk back to Dick & Donna's place, Dick told me town folks had been seeing a Bear drinking out of Salmom Creek. Needless to say I walked back up the hill faster than our stroll down. I never really knew if he was teasing me or not. On our future visits to Marienville things just wont be the same without him.
