Duane Gissel
December 16, 1954 - February 2, 2024
Duane Gissel, 69 years old, of Madison, WI, died Friday, February 2, 2024, at his home, surrounded by his family, after a long illness.
A Celebration of Life will be held at 11:00 a.m. on February 17, 2024, at First Presbyterian Church in Waunakee, WI.
The second son of Daryl "Bud" Gissel and Thomasine "Tommie" Gissel, Duane was born December 16, 1954. Duane and his three siblings grew up on the family farm, and it was there that Duane developed a passion for the outdoors and for gardening. Duane graduated from Independence High School in 1973, and earned a bachelor's degree in horticulture from Iowa State University in 1977. For the rest of his life, Duane was proud to don the Cyclone Red, especially when around the Black and Gold alumni of the University of Iowa. While attending Iowa State, Duane met and fell in love with Ruth Arthur, a pastor's daughter. They met at a horticulture convention and from there their love bloomed... forgive us, but Duane loved a good pun.
They were married in May 1978. At the end, Ruth selflessly lived out their marriage vows as Duane's primary caregiver, ensuring his comfort in their home. They raised two children, Sarah and Thomas. Duane loved being a father and was very proud of his children's accomplishments.
Duane worked in many different areas of horticulture over his career, from managing privately owned garden centers in Lincoln, NE, Stevens Point, WI, and Davenport, IA, to managing and opening Lowes Garden Centers in the Midwest. He served as the horticulturist for the Des Moines Botanical Garden and the Quad Cities Botanical Garden. The last 15 years of his career focused on education with the Scott County Iowa State Extension office in Bettendorf, IA. One of his many responsibilities was the Master Gardener Program. Sharing his passion and knowledge of gardening with the community brought him great joy.
The family were devoted Lutherans and Duane enjoyed various Bible studies, both in mens groups and couples. He attended Bible Study Fellowship and Promise Keepers. Duane loved working in his gardens, both vegetable and flowering. The backyard of the Gissel home in Bettendorf was worthy of a home and garden magazine cover and was something Duane was very proud of.
Duane is survived by his wife, Ruth; daughter, Sarah (Tim) Lundquist of Waunakee, WI; and son Thomas Gissel (partner Michelle Canada), of St. Paul, MN. He is survived by two grandchildren: Henry (12) and Olivia (10) Lundquist; as well as his brothers: Gary and Dean Gissel; and his sister, Gretchen Gissel. He was preceded in death by his parents; and a granddaughter.
Duane's family is especially grateful for the care and support provided by Agrace Hospice.
Memorials can be sent to Agrace Hospice, Madison, WI, Master Gardener Program c/o Scott Co Extension Director, 875 Tanglewood Lane, Bettendorf, IA, 52722.

Although miles came between us later in our lives, the memories will live on. We had a few interactions on Facebook when I would ask for one of my mystery plants to be identified by Duane. This is an amusing shot of our group at the one-room Country School we attended until it closed and another picture of the last time I saw him at my Brother Don's Celebration of Life in 2010 in Independence. Wishing all his family and friends smiles to replace the tears as he is honored and remembered. Sure would love to have seen his beautiful garden.

Duane was a good high school classmate friend. Type of friend you want to know through out the years. Unfortunately never usually happens. Gone but not forgotten. RIP Duane

Duane was a great guy and an exceptional mentor to all of the Master Gardeners thru the ISU Extension program. I served on the Executive Board while he was there and he was such a wealth of knowledge for all of us. He has been dearly missed since he left the program. His gardens were a highlight to visit.
My deepest sympathy to his family.

We fondly remember our time at All Saints Lutheran church in Davenport with your family and so many others. I especially remember Monday morning men´s Bible studies at the Country Kitchen. It took real commitment for about a dozen of us (including Duane) to be there at 6:15 am on Mondays. God´s blessings to your family.

My fund memory of Duane was when my husband and l came to their home to pick up our daughter Michelle. They were coming back from having lunch at a barbecue place. He gave my daughter a big goodbye hug. Seeing him doing that, with a little smodge of barbecue sauce at the side of his mustache and all, melted my heart. I felt so happy for my daughter. I felt the love and acceptance. From that momment I knew my daughter would be fine.
Thank you Duane!

Duane was a classmate in high school and was helpful to me in Algebra class! As an adult it was always a pleasure to run into him out and about in the Quad Cities. He was just a great guy.
My condolences to you and your family.

Many fond memories of Duane as we grew up together working on our parents farms. Graduated high school in the same class and went from there to attend ISU. We lived in the same dorm for a couple years and were roommates for a while. Duane was a genuinely great guy and I am proud to have known him. Condolences to all of his family. You are in our thoughts and prayers.

Ruth - Michelle and I and family are holding you close these days. I know that joy and sorrow are intertwined such that your emotions are on a roller coaster. I simply know that Duane was a pleasure to know, and I will always remember him as a faithful man, and I loved sharing grocery bargain tips with him at Fareway and HyVee.

What a great guy - great humor and with that his laugh. His one of a kind, only Duane voice when he talked. His love for stamps and good grilling out. And of course, the Master Gardeners garden and plants. Such a joy and great memories. You are missed and one day we will be reunited. Until that day - love - Brother Out Law John
