Dennis Kennedy Obituary

Dennis William Kennedy

Turners Falls, MA - Dr. Dennis William Kennedy, age 75, passed away peacefully in his home in Turners Falls, MA, on June 25th, 2025. Born on January 9, 1950, Dennis was the beloved son of the late William and Frances (O'Leary) Kennedy.

He was a proud graduate of Holy Family High School, Stonehill College, and received his Master's and Doctorate in English Literature from the University of Massachusetts, Amherst.

He devoted his life to educating young people. In his early life, he was the director of Cathedral Camp in Lakeville and taught and coached basketball in his hometown of New Bedford. After receiving his PhD, he taught English and Irish literature at Northfield Mount Hermon School for 35 years, where he was a pillar of the community, a basketball coach, a debate coach, a favorite and formative teacher, an adviser to hundreds, a recipient of multiple awards and fellowships, and a leader of student and alumni trips to Ireland.

Dennis loved music, literature, poetry, and the written word and had an unparalleled memory. He had memorized innumerable poems and books and each year on Christmas recited "Twas the Night Before Christmas" and "The Grinch Who Stole Christmas" from memory. He always filled the house with singing - songs both real and made-up. His voice, guitar, banjo, piano, and penny whistle were the soundtrack to many lifetimes of happy memories. He was a monumental presence. In his final months, he sat next to a pile of printed poems, the most worn of which was: "Do Not Go Gentle Into that Good Night: Old age should burn and rave at the close of day; Rage, rage against the dying of the light".

Among all his many accomplishments, his family was his greatest. He was a devoted husband, a loving and animated father, and a silly and sweet grandfather. He built a beautiful life for his family between an idyllic boarding school campus and the family home on Cape Cod.

Dennis is survived by his loving wife of 48 years (married July 18, 1976), Mary Kennedy, his children, Katie Kennedy Freeman (Scott), Denny Kennedy (Naomi), Sean Kennedy (Alisha), and grandchildren Maxwell, Madeline, and Olivia Freeman and Nico Kennedy. He was proceeded in death by his sister Sheila Pittman (Robert) and leaves behind his sisters Kathleen Hohl (Thomas), Jane Small (Daniel), Mary Treen (David), and Patricia McKnight (Joseph), and his beloved nieces and nephews.

Our brilliant husband, father, grandfather, brother, uncle, teacher, and friend did not go gentle, and raged against the dying of his brilliant, bright light. It will forever remain in the hearts of those who loved him.

In his living will, Dennis requested: "I want no wake or funeral ceremony. I want those I loved to remember how wonderful my life was, and be happy in their own lives."

A scholarship fund has been set up in his name. Donations can be made at NMH https://together.nmhschool.org/register/NMHGiving - NMH Fund-Financial Aid, in Memory of Dennis W. Kennedy.

Dennis was a great good man. He was my mentor in my first job out of college and taught me to love literature, and teaching with a delighted zest and energy. Always ready to laugh, always ready to dig in. He taught me (and showed me with our classes), the pleasure of high standards and hard thinking--what great fun it was to dig in to a text, to an idea and really wrestle with it. He taught me the power of challenging ideas, of refusing easy answers, and the sheer delights of great writing.

He sang at my wedding, his lovely voice echoing in the chapel. He became a touchstone for my own movement through the world--leaving teaching, coming back on a book tour, bringing my own daughter to NMH.

Always ready with a smile, always curious, eager to share and to ask, but with a devilish edge, always ready for mischief. He put out a sort of gravity that pulled me into a better version of myself, as I'm sure he did with generations of students, friends and colleagues.

It was my pleasure to know him, and my heart goes out to Mary and his family.

The Kusek family will always remember the wonderful times we had at the Kennedy home. At their holiday gatherings Dennis was truly Old Fezziwig from a Christmas Carol and made every memory bright and enduring. You are so dearly missed by all. None of us will ever forget you. Rest in peace, old friend. Thank you for the joy that you brought to all of us.

Dennis was a wonderful friend during our Stonehill College years 1967-1971!. He created and coached a girls basketball team that I participated in at 5'2" tall. He encouraged everyone to be their best, to be kind and most of all to laugh and sing, So much laughter and fun at Brother Mike's and in our Townhouses,,,,, I wish you peace and comfort knowing that Dennis was loved by many - from the good ol' college days,,,,,,
It is hard to forget someone who gave us so much to remember........For moments shared will never die,

Mary, Sam and I have so many fond memories our passing conversations with you along the paths of NMH or sharing a meal in alumni hall. Dennis was a mentor to the two of us in so many ways when we were new to NMH. Grace to you and your family during this time of grieving. Jen and Sam Keator

My sincerest condolences to Dennis´ wife and family and to the Kennedy women who have lost their beloved brother, Dennis, as well as their beloved sister, Sheila, within the course of one month. I was a friend to both Dennis and Sheila in high school and remember them fondly at this moment of sorrow. I´ve not seen Dennis in many years but am not surprised by his success as a teacher, mentor and community leader. He will forever be remembered locally for his basketball exploits as a member of the gallant 1967 Holy Family championship squad. May Dennis and Sheila´s memories bring joy to all who had the pleasure of enjoying their love and companionship over the years.

I was Dennis "freshman roommate from hell" at Stonehill. Two totally mismatched 18 year olds. I was everything he wasn´t, serious, dedicated, and driven to succeed. We had a good laugh about it at our 20 year reunion and I followed his career in education with great pride. My condolences to his family and all the students whose lives he impacted so positively. The pride of New Bedford. May he rest in peace.

Mary, I was so sorry to read of Dennis's death. As you would imagine, the flood of memories that have been released is almost overwhelming. Memories of our one year together as students at Holy Family High School (me as a senior, Dennis as a freshman); memories of the basketball games; memories of our days together on the HFHS faculty; memories of your wedding; memories of the Kennedy weddings for which I played the organ; memories of the Christmas cards with the interesting notes and the pictures of your family as it grew and matured. So many memories, and such overwhelmingly wonderful ones. I know you have even more, but when anyone is dealing with a person like Dennis, very little is ever truly neutral. He was an overwhelming presence in all that he did, and in all that he was. Please accept my sympathy for you and your family on your loss. Know that you will be in the minds and hearts of many of us for years to come.

In 1990/1991 he taught my English class at NMH. I remember him saying back then that he wanted to be buried on a particular hill in Ireland overlooking the dramatic ocean below. I think his reason was so that the people who came to be with him would have a beautiful place to enjoy their visit.

I am so grateful to have him influence my life at such an important age in my development.

In keeping with his (likely much more recent) living will, I do remember how wonderful his life was, and I'll share that I'm very happy in my own life. I'll always be grateful for his role in making it so.

It seemed so easy for him to recite a library full of poetry from memory.

He was amazing.

Heartfelt sympathy to all the Kennedys. Dennis was indeed"a monumental presence." As a colleague at St. Francis Xavier School, he exuded joy and love for life. Rest in the Lord´s peace.
