Robert R. Dutton
Robert R. Dutton passed away peacefully in his home on September 21, 2009, with his family at his side. He was born in Chico, attended Chico High School and played fullback along side his brother Burt, quarterback, for the Chico football team. He served in the Army from 1942-45, spending half his years in Kansas and half in England where he began his lifelong love of the British Isles.
With the help of the GI Bill, Bob attended Chico State in 1946, majoring in English. He always spoke highly of his teacher Ruby Jones who gave instruction in composition. She encouraged him; she taught him.
Bob would go on to teach composition and literature at Franklin High School and at Delta College, where he served as Chairman of the English Department.
He earned a PhD in English from UOP in 1966. His dissertation on Saul Bellow was published by Twayne Publishing Company and is still in print electronically.
Bob loved teaching, and many of his students loved his classes. His American Literature and World Masterpiece classes were always full.
When he retired, he was able to spend several weeks a year in England in Hampstead. He met a couple of retired British professors whose flat he rented when they traveled outside England. The three of them became close friends, and Bob would go early to visit with them before they left for their vacation. These trips to England were a source of joy.
Bob's elder son Robert Dutton Jr. passed away in 2001. Bob is survived by his younger son, Scott Van Dutton of Oceanside.
Donations in his memory may be made to Hospice of San Joaquin, 3888 Pacific Avenue, Stockton, CA 95204 or to Friends of the Library, 1724 West Hammer Lane, Stockton, CA, 95207.

My sincere condolences to the Dutton Family. Mr. Dutton was also one of my teachers at Franklin back in 1953. He was not only a good teacher, he was also a very caring and understanding teacher and one of those teachers you never forget. Thank you for the lessons taught Mr. Dutton. RIP.

Mr. Dutton was an exceptional teacher at Franklin High School. He made reading and discussing literature a joy. He challenged us continually to think, to create, and to search our potentials. Because of him, I decided to pursue a career in teaching. I was lucky enough to return to Franklin to teach.
I can't thank him enough for his willingness to challenge me and for his friendship. Condolences to his family.

I would like to extend my heartfelt sympathy to the family and friends of Dr. Robert Dutton.
Dr. Dutton was an extraordinary professor. His words still live in the "margins" of all four of our course textbooks. Many times, throughout my life, I have referred to our class textbooks simply to reflect on fond memories of our lively class reviews of the classics. These unforgettable moments will live my heart forever.
I am so sorry for your loss. May God Bless and comfort you during this time.

What a wonderful man. I will always remember him as such a kind, loving person and one of the best teachers I ever had. He gave so much attention to his students in English Literature at Delta College and will be greatly missed. I was a student of his in 1973 and again in 1985. A beautiful example of a human being that we should all strive to be. Thank you Dr. Dutton. Rest in peace.
