Larry Coltrain Obituary

Larry David Coltrain

GREENVILLE - Larry David Coltrain, age 71, passed away peacefully Saturday afternoon at the home of his daughter and son-in-law, Lisa and Johnny Stanley of Greenville, NC.

A memorial service conducted by Rev. Chris Schneider of Fellowship Baptist Church in Williamston, NC, will be held in the chapel of Smith Funeral Service & Crematory in Greenville, NC at 12:00 pm Wednesday afternoon, August 15, 2018. Visitation will be held prior to the service beginning at 10:30 am.

He is survived by his children, Lisa Stanley (Johnny) and Lorri Stanley (Mike) of Greenville, NC and Joshua David Coltrain (Jackie) and grandchildren, Carson, Archer and Reid, all of Manteo, NC. He was preceded in death by his parents, Dorcas Coltrain Davenport, Leslie David Coltrain and step-father, Gilbert Davenport. He is survived by three sisters, Trish Stalls (Stacy) of Farm Life Community, Barbara Coltrain Knox (Roger, deceased) Linda Bowen (Roger) and a brother, Danny Gray Coltrain all of Williamston, NC; five nieces and one nephew.

Born in Newport News, VA, Larry spent his early years in Williamston, NC where he married Audrey Lee, and had two daughters. He later married Judy Taylor, and had a son.

A licensed electrician, Larry owned Coltrain's Electrical Company in Williamston, NC. He enjoyed sharing his technical knowledge teaching several electrical classes at Martin Community College. His love of fishing and boating inspired him to move his electrical company to the Outer Banks of North Carolina. While living on the Outer Banks, he acquired a Captain's License and enjoyed chartering fishing excursions. An avid outdoorsman, Larry raised and trained hunting dogs and participated in field trials. He also owned horses and enjoyed horseback riding.

His artistic talents were evidenced by his paintings and his hobby as a bladesmith. In his later years, Larry move to Columbia, NC where he opened a gun shop.

Larry was "raised to the sublime degree of Master Mason" in 1978. This marks 40 years of service and dedication to Skewarkee Lodge #90.

The family is grateful to Jessica Weatherly and Bettie Roberson for the compassionate care given during Larry's declining health, and to Johnny and Lisa Stanley for providing a loving home for Larry over the last four years.
