D. Bresch Obituary

D. Marie Bresch

D. Marie Bresch, 96, was born in 1924 in a yellow taxicab in Sioux City, Iowa, and continued in life to do things her own way. On Nov 12, Marie, the daughter of Polish immigrants, moved on to her next adventure, leaving behind those family and friends who loved her. She could swing a mean golf club and was Sioux City Women's Champion at 16. Soon after, she ran away and married her high school sweetheart. Thus began her journey of adventure and travel as a Navy wife, mother and career executive secretary during a time when women just didn't do that.

Marie's catch phrase was "think positive." She was known for not holding back her opinion and had a knack for letting everyone know that her way was the right way. Marie loved to share her advice and beliefs about natural medicine gathered from all her reading. She left behind a lot of stuff to her daughters - who have no idea what to do with it... so if you're looking for a 1990's desktop computer, wood from disassembled crates when she and her husband moved in the 70's ("you never know when you might need it"), or tchotchkes from her travels around the world - you know who to call.

After Marie's retirement from government work, she pursued her love of bridge, master gardening and unrelenting work on the Gardeners Reclaiming Our Wayside (GROW), Carson City Beautification Project. Marie expressed her artistic passion through years of creating, writing about, teaching and leadership work (President 1987-1989) with A.T.H.A. (Assn of Traditional Hooking Artists). With a smile, she loved to call herself a "happy hooker."

Marie was preceded in death by her loving husband Berton Bresch. She will be sorely missed and is survived by her 2 daughters, Kathleen Stanway and Paticia Seybolt, and their husbands; 4 grandchildren, 3 great-grandchildren, and 4 great-great grandchildren.

In lieu of a memorial service, please: (1) take a walk in a public garden while thinking of your favorite Marie story; (2) have a cup of tea with a friend; (3) dance to a Perry Como song; and (4) if ever in the mood, catch an episode of M*A*S*H (she loved it).

Kathy and Dave, Pulle, John and Heather - Tim and I are so sorry for your loss. Our family met Bert, Marie and Kathy when they were posted to Ottawa, Canada in 1969 and since then our families have shared so many memories with Marie that revolved around rug hooking, sewing, gardenng, antiques and schnauzers. We were always amazed at Marie’s amazing talents and her sense of fashion and flair. I was so blessed to have such a remarkable person in my life and will miss her dearly. I will miss my “Aunt” Marie's fun spirit, positive attitude and our conversations always ending with "love you, love you, love you". Our family extends our deepest sympathy and hope that your memories will comfort you. A donation to ATHA was made her memory.

Marie was a force of nature. I met her through her husband who also worked at BLM in Reno. Both a delight, I remember water witching in their backyard, enjoying that lovely setting. Many other memories of them both and that beautiful rug hooking created by Marie. RIP, Marie. I would suspect you have left your family with some WONDERFUL memories.

I first met Marie in 1992 when I was hired to run the University of Nevada Cooperative Extension Master Gardener Program. Marie had been a Master Gardener for more than a decade and knew so much more than I did! I counted her as one of the most dedicated Master Gardeners in the program for years and she sure told me what to do. I always learned a lot from her. We traveled on many Master Gardener trips and became fast friends through the years. We talked almost every week and I miss her wisdom and wit.

I began my career working directly under Marie at BLM’s Public Affairs Office in 1980. I was fresh out of high school and Marie shared her skills of running a fine tuned office. Who knew scotch tape would lift typos off the paper and worked almost as good as correction tape? Marie knew that! She shared her knowledge and creativity willingly and boy she knew a lot. I sincerely appreciate the impact she made in my career. May her family find peace in their memories.
