I am very sad to be just now learning of the death of my friend Leo Neidhold. I had the honor of attending Music Camp at the University of Alaska with he and and other amazing brass players in Fairbanks in the 1970s. Leo was always exceptionally funny and light and knew what was important about a lifetime of teaching and the arts. I will never forget him. He was one of the few people who could really keep it real. Peace and center to you in whatever eternity you know, dear brother.

My fondest memories of Leonard are all the Thanksgivings we would share. The Milles and Neidhold families would alternate locations but we always enjoyed the gatherings!! Thank you and your memory will live on in our hearts.

The finest band instructor I have witnessed, Leonard could demonstrate every instrument in the band with a kindness and empathy to the student. On the bandstand, he was a force that only those of us who performed with him will understand. His influence on students will not fade away; neither will our memories of fishing, his pickup truck and his faithful dog.

Oh I am so very sorry to hear of Leonard's passing. My sincere condolences to Caryn and family. Leonard left me with the amazingly tasty recipe of stir fried broccoli with pesto, pine nuts, and green olives. Every time I make this I think of him. I'm so, sorry, Neihold family. And for Caryn and children, you have my deepest sympathy.

I am really sad that he's gone, not just about him being an amazing trimbone player, but he was my teacher at billinghurst. I feel bad because I feel like he understood me the most out of all my teachers, especially since I am playing trombone like he did. So I wanted to say that I am sorry he passed away and I hope his family can cope is loss.

I was blessed to have Mr. Neidhold as my middle school band teacher. I have always looked back fondly on my time in his band - I learned a lot under him and grew tremendously. I'm so sad to hear that he passed away so young. My deepest condolences to his family. He was a great man.

Deep condolences to the Neidhold family. Leonard was a joyful and kind person who made high school band a lot of fun. His skill inspired me (and others) to work harder and aim for the high bar he was setting. Since high school, I always think of Leonard when I hear a good jazz band and especially a good trombone solo. He will live on through our memories. Peace to his family.

My thoughts and prayers are with the Neidhold family during this time of great loss. I had the privilege of being Mr. Neidhold's student during my years at Trainer Middle School - he was a phenomenal teacher, mentor, and musician. Music was very much a part of who he was and he passed that love on to his students. Always there to help and encourage, he played an important part in shaping me into the musician I am today.

Leonard was one of the finest musicians I
ever met. His trombone tone was absolutely
golden. His positive attitude
as a teacher will be remembered by
by his young students enrolled at
the UAF Summer Music Camp in the late 70s,
and also by students in music courses he took
while at UAF. I shall remember him as
one of the finest students I ever had enrolled
in my music theory classes at UAF.

The Neidholds were my second parents from middle school through college. Their mentorship, friendship and love has always been incomparable. Leonard and Caryn helped shape my life and I know affected so many in this community with their love of music and kindness. Leonard was an amazing teacher, family man, and a wonderful soul. He will be so missed. Our thoughts and prayers are with his incredible family.

Mr. Neidhold was a wonderful man who invested into the lives of his students. I was privileged to have him as a teacher at Billinghurst Middle School from 2011-2013. He helped instill a passion for music, culture and history. I recall many wonderful, exciting and fun opportunities he created for his class. He expected the best from us all and In so doing helped us realize our potential not only as students, but in life. I recall an instance after class one day when a handful of us boys were laughing and making jokes, of which I'm sure was not the most quality conversation. He respectfully encouraged us to be better men, and to carry ourselves with more dignity. That is the kind of man I rember him to be, and I have often thought of my time in his classroom. I will always think of him when I hear classic jazz songs like April in Paris, where he first shared his passion for the rich history of so many songs and famous jazz musicians. I will remember him as such also, famous in my mind, and a great influence at a time so critical for young men and women. Prayers to his loved ones and family and a great thanks for his shared time and influence!

Leonard was my middle school band teacher, and he was easily my favorite teacher I've ever had. When the jazz band didn't have enough trombone players, he convinced me to switch from trumpet. He gave me well over a dozen private lessons after school free of charge, and he was one of the few friends I had during those years. His passion for music was great, but his passion for people in his life was visibly much greater. I was fortunate to be able to thank him a few years ago when I found him playing with his band at Ceol. He of course was as humble as can be in response, and a great deal of fun to chat with again. I wish his friends and family the best in this very sad time, and can only imagine the day to day cheer he brought to their lives.

He was my dear friend and compadre in music. No matter what was going on, Leonard always played with such fervor and emotion that he would bring you to tears on a ballad, or bring you to your feet during a raucous big band piece. He reminded me so much of the late Carl Fontana by what he would "say" during his solos. Carl never ran out of things to play (say), and neither did Leonard, and he would always say something different the next time he would play the same song. A true musician, a true friend, and a true teacher. I will miss this giant for the rest of my life, but I know that through the recordings we did together, Leonard will always live. God bless all of the Neidhold family and his dearest friends, the Engstroms. Play on, my friend... Play on.

He was my orchestra teacher in middle school in 2006, and like many of his other students, he had shown his passion and dedication in music through to us. Sending love and blessings to his family.

I'm so saddened by the news of Leonard's passing. I attended school with him beginning at University Park Elementary School and all the way up through high school at Lathrop High School.
I so vividly remember his laugh and his fun, lighthearted personality! I don't ever remember him without a smile on his face. He was always a kindhearted, joyful and friendly guy. Those around him were always smiling or laughing thanks to his influence!
Although I have not seen him in many years, thoughts of him remain etched in my memories, making yesteryear seem so very dear. He was an all-around good guy! He made our schooldays so much fun.
Thanks for the memories, Leonard. May you rest in peace after a life well lived.
I wish to send my condolences and prayers to his wife and children, as well as his family and friends both near and far.

Leonard was very special welcoming me to the music side when I first arrived in Fairbanks in 1980. Even then your gift in conducting/teaching/playing was easy to spot. The Jazz group, for the annual Fairbanks fairs in the 80's was so fun to play in and for all to listen to. Thank you Leonard from the many lives you have touched and always with kindness and that smile .
