GILBERT LANE SAMPSON

PEMBROKE — Mr. Gilbert Lane Sampson was born Feb. 21, 1938, and departed this life for his heavenly home on Sunday, June 13, 2021, at the age of 83.

He was preceded in death by his parents, Mr. James Albert Sampson and Mrs. Zettie Belle Sanderson; his first wife, Mrs. Nancy M. Sampson; and his son, Mr. Glenn E. Sampson.

The funeral will be 4 p.m. Wednesday, June 16, 2021, at Harpers Ferry Baptist Church, with Revs. Lawrence Garner and Donald Bullard officiating. Burial will follow in the Lumbee Memorial Gardens.

Mr. Sampson was born an Indian of the Lumbee Tribe of North Carolina, where he grew up in Pembroke, and attended the Public Schools of Robeson County. He was a 1958 graduate of Pembroke State University, earning a B.S. in mathematics and a B.S. in chemistry. He also earned a M.A. in mathematics education from the University of Arkansas and a Ph.D. in mathematics education from New York University.

He was a professor of mathematics at The University of North Carolina at Pembroke for 42 years, where he served as chair of the Mathematics and Computer Science Department from 1982 to 2002. He was a devout Christian and a member of Harpers Ferry Baptist Church of Pembroke, where he taught the Adult Sunday School class for most of his life and led the congregation through devotion. His love of family, devotion to Christ, and dedication to education touched many lives and he will be remembered always in the hearts of his family, friends, and students.

Mr. Sampson is survived by his wife, Mrs. Annell G. Sampson; four sons, Mr. Gregory L. Sampson (Kristin), Mr. Christopher S. Sampson, Mr. Daniel O. Sampson (Ana), Mr. Clifton B. I cried so much when you died because I know that it will never feel the same and it didn't.

A nurturing father who seemed to be a perfect mother as well. I just realized that Gilbert and his cousin Waltz were born on the same date, February 21, but five years apart. The passed away exactly five years apart. There must be something in God's plan when dear cousins have this kind of coincidence---. Both were Math teachers who inspired many young people. I know they are rejoicing now together.

Dr. Sampson was my professor while attending Pembroke University and was highly respected and well-liked by all the student body. The young generation of professors could have learned a thing or two on how to be a professor AND teacher to the students from Dr. Sampson. I fondly recall, Dr. Sampson would walk and down the aisles between the student's desk and help those struggling with the algebra or calculus problems. He truly cared about the students- it was evident from his smile the moment we "figured out" to the solution to a homework or class assignment. Dr. Sampson will be remembered as one of the good ones at Pembroke. He will be missed by all his students.
