Charles Behrends Obituary

Charles R. Behrends 1936—2018
Charles R. Behrends, 82, of Rockford passed away September 6, 2018. Chuck was born July 29, 1936, in Brownstown, IL to Detrich and Sylvia (Durbin) Behrends. After the death of his mother, Chuck was raised by his aunt and uncle, Emily and Eric Augustine of Decatur, IL. He graduated from Decatur High School in 1954. He went on to graduate from Western Illinois University with a B.S. in Education. He received nine varsity letters: four in basketball, four in baseball, and one in tennis. He was also 2nd team All American for basketball in 1958, and that team went 27-1 and took second place in the NAIA National Tournament. In 1965, he received a M.S. in education from Northern Illinois University. Chuck signed a small bonus contract as a pitcher with the St. Louis Cardinals. He played for three seasons in the minor leagues before a pinched nerve ended his baseball career. During his stint with the Cardinals, he compiled a record of 22 wins and 11 losses. He was an avid Cub fan. He coached high school basketball at Macomb, Leaf River, and Sycamore. In 1965, he and his family moved to Rockford where he served in numerous capacities at Rock Valley College: teacher, head men's basketball coach, head of the physical education department, athletic director for men's and women's sports, golf instructor, math instructor, and ran pitching clinics for young athletes. After retiring from RVC, Chuck continued to be involved in Rockford athletics. He coached girls' and boys' golf at Guilford High School. He's been elected into five Halls of Fame. Chuck was proud of his athletic prowess. He was an avid golfer and recorded four holes in one. Chuck Behrends was a talented teacher and coach who influenced the lives of many young people. He was an enthusiastic motivator who loved teaching and coaching. Chuck was a wonderful husband, father, and grandfather who loved his family more than anything. He leaves behind his wife of 59 years, Pat; three sons, David and Randy of Las Vegas, NV and Chad of Pewaukee, WI; grandchildren, Alex Colombi, Zachary and Austin Behrends, Brittany Behrends, and Peyton Behrends; and three great- grandchildren.

Pat and Family,

Sorry to hear about Coach. Our hearts and prayers are with you and your family. He was a great person and a great coach. Of all the basketball coaches I had growing up Coach Behrends was definitely the best. He taught me and many others how to work hard and love
the game. RIP Coach

Dear Pat, Dave, Randy & Chad,
Speaking to your husband and father about RVC athletics and basketball was such a pleasure. His willingness to talk to new coaches and employees deepened our appreciation for the breakthroughs and growing pains experienced in the early years.
His impact is deeply appreciated!

Pat and Family:

Coach Behrends was a wondeful mentor, coach, and friend. He has had a lasting impact on my life since the days in Sycamore, IL. The many times we played golf together every day before the start of school made us very close.

I have thought about him often and referred to life's tips and suggestions during my career in sports and business.

He was a great man and the people that he has touched will miss him.

God Bless you family.

Coach Behrends' family,

I offer sincere condolences to all of you. Rock Valley College has lost one its most notable personalities. I admired the intensity with which he coached his teams and his friendship he carried after his players left. I will never forget the game between Malcolm X College and Rock Valley College in 1969. The outcome determined the winner which would advance to the state finals. Rock Valley won something like 89-87. I'll never forget that team-Larry Sidney, Dwayne Hoff, Jim Yeager, Steve Dennison, and 6th man Paul Perrone among others. I rank this game right up there w/Wisconsin v Kentucky games in the Final Four.
Coach, well played and well lived.

So very sorry for your loss Mrs. Behrends and family. I was devastated to hear of his passing. He was the best coach I ever had, and without him I never would have gone to Wisconsin Pakside, he got me a "go", as he called it. I will truly miss that man, he was a wonderful role model for me. and I respected him greatly. My deepest condolences

It can be so hard to face the first year without your loved one, but the love of family and friends can carry you through.

Coach Behrends was a true professional who loved his role as a mentor and coach. As a former coach, I have the utmost respect for COACH and what he meant to RVC and the entire Rockford Community. Along with Norm Matzel and Pete Lonsway ( and many more)they shaped Rock Valley College into the great educational institution it is today.

I salute you and your memory Coach Behrends! R I P
