Bert Terry Obituary

Bert Terry, who introduced soccer to generations of Sacramento youngsters, survived Nazi bombing raids over his home in Bristol, England, guarded the Tokyo Imperial Palace, rode a motorcycle across Africa and hunted sunken treasure in clear blue waters off Costa Rica, died in his sleep at his Carmichael home, Monday, October 16, 2017. He was 91. Mr. Terry was a journeyman printer who learned his trade as a teenager in his native England. He worked for newspapers in Bristol and Port Elizabeth, South Africa, before immigrating to the United States in the 1960s. He rode a Greyhound bus across the country, stopped in Sacramento and landed a job at The Bee, where he worked until 1978. World War II interrupted Mr. Terry's printshop apprenticeship. Trying to enlist in the Royal Marines at age 17, he was sent away by a sergeant who said, "Go home to your mother." A year later, Mr. Terry was in the British Army en route to the South Pacific as the war ended. He passed through Hiroshima months after the city was destroyed by the atomic bomb, and served in Tokyo, where he guarded Japanese prisoners and marched sentry duty at the Imperial Palace. Wherever his travels carried him, Mr. Terry was never far from a soccer pitch. A superb athlete who played the game professionally in England, Mr. Terry established an unsurpassed reputation as a soccer coach. In California, he helped create the first organized soccer leagues for young people and was named the first State Youth Coach and inducted into the soccer Hall of Fame in August of 2008. He coached the Rio Americano High School boys team for 18 years and turned the Raiders into a regional powerhouse. Mr. Terry was a player and coach in the Central California Soccer League, and in the 1970s, he assisted with the professional Sacramento Spirits. While approaching his 80th birthday, he coached under-6 and under-8 youth for the Greenhaven Soccer Club instructing the children and grandchildren of several former players. For four decades, Mr. Terry could be found each Friday afternoon at the Fox & Goose pub, enjoying pints of beer with friends. He captivated newcomers with stories about his adventures, which included a motorcycle trek across Africa, where Mr. Terry was briefly slowed by lions. A hidden treasure map brought Mr. Terry to Costa Rica aboard a sailboat. He found no treasure. Mr. Terry drank his final round at the Fox & Goose three days before his death. He is survived by his brother Ken and sister Barbara, both of Bristol, and several nephews and nieces. At Mr. Terry's request, his ashes will be scattered over San Francisco Bay. An appreciation of his life will be held at the Fox & Goose on Friday November 17, 2017 5pm - 9pm. Email [email protected] for more details.

I just heard that Bert passed away. I´m not in Sacramento anymore so I´m way behind in the news. Bert was a great coach and leader. I had the pleasure of playing for him with BAC and many other teams. His endless energy and insights were just incredible. He brought Sacramento soccer to new heights and will be missed.

Went to grab a pint yesterday and learned of his passing. He helped my dad Chip Edin with starting Turn Verein Soccer Club and BAC (British American Soccer) in the 70's along coaching at many summer camps...a true Sacramento Soccer legend to many. Hope they are both enjoying a pint together. God Speed!

It was tough to lose my Dad and Bert Terry in the same week. I will sorely miss both of them. Bert taught us players so much about soccer, but he was more than a coach for many of us. I met him in the fall of 1973 after I had moved from Britain back to Sacramento and had just started as a sophomore at Rio American High School. Bert's Rio program became my community and I loved his inspiring approach to the game and his calm and congenial attitude to life. I will think about Bert's calmness and patience every time I go to a West Ham home game - I will need it!

I knew Bert for many years at The Fox and Goose and playing football in Sacramento. Bert was a gentleman of the first order - good natured and generous with his time. Sacramento is a better place because Bert made it his home and we will all be grateful for the time we had with him - especially over a pint at The Fox and Goose. Cheers mate and well done to you.

Despite my best efforts, Coach Terry turned me into a pretty good right wing forward at Rio Americano. Thank you Bert for all the lessons, for getting us to believe in ourselves, and for getting our spring league team into the 1971 state finals, even if we did get creamed. You were our inspiration. A life well-lived.

A true Icon in the Sacramento Soccer Community. There were plenty of camps, practices, and games where Bert would impart his soccer knowledge onto the kids...making us better players, better teammates, and better people. He was our district ODP coach and even cheered us on, when we played against his Rio Raiders...reminding us to leave it on the pitch; because we will be teammates again soon...Bert Terry taught me the importance of soccer fashion, so I wear the bucket hat as a coach now. Here's to a pint at the Fox & Goose in honor of Mr Sacramento Soccer!

Bert was my varsity soccer coach all four year at Rio Americano HS in the 80's. My then boyfriend, and now husband of 30 years, was equipment manager his senior year. Since those days, we have had the pleasure of keeping in touch with Bert at soccer games I referee and Bert's birthdays. He was such a strong, kind presence with an uninhibited laugh. His Brittish accent ever so familiar to pick out of the crowd as he'd yell out, "Get the bloody ball!" RIP Bert. You will be greatly missed.

From being my ODP coach to 3 rivers soccer camp to having a beer together after games, Bert always had a smile and kind word to share. You will be missed

I first met Bert when he coached my brother Danny and I on Sacramento All Star teams in the mid 1970's. Everyone in the soccer community respected and appreciated this wonderful gentleman. He was a tall magnetic figure who taught and encouraged. As an a adult I would catch him on Sundays on his bike at Southside Park watching games and on Fridays would periodically share a pint with him at the Fox and Goose. I will miss his great stories, easy smile and contagious laughter. Good bye Bert my coach and friend.

Knee, nose, ball. Bert Terry changed my life. Sharing his love for the game, he built character and instilled an appreciation for team spirit and team effort that I carry today. With gratitude, I honor his memory and mourn his passing.

I wish I knew this incredible, courageous, worthwhile, fit, unique, productive, caring and helping person. He looks like he chose to be happy and see the glass, or beer stein, half full in stead of half empty.

Bert was my first soccer coach and he was also a friend. Yes, he taught me a lot about soccer, but he also taught me about life. Maybe someday the soccer field at Rio will be named after him. Lots of memories, he will be missed.

Bert Terry was not only a great coach but a great man to know. His kindness and ability to coach was superior. The community owes so much gratitude for this wonderful person to be in our lives. People became better people with the guidance of his knowledge. I raise a pint in your honor. You truly will be missed.
