Merle Austin Obituary

Our dad and friend passed on December 4th with family at his side. Born April 18, 1927 in Hunter, Oklahoma, the 6th of 7 children, he being the last of all to pass. The family moved to California in 1939. He enlisted in the Navy in 1946 while a senior at McClatchy High School. While serving in Guam his father died; receiving a dependency discharge, came home to graduate and was proud to support his mother and sister. In 1949 he married Violet Cherryholmes, his sweetheart from the 8th grade. They built their home in Sierra Oaks Vista in 1956 and raised two children Gene (Trinette) and Susan Crane (Lawrence). They became amazing grandparents of Sam, Andrew (Tara) and Amanda (AJ), and 3-great-grandchildren. His best friend, our mom passed in 2011 after 62 years of marriage. He credits her for all the good that happened to him, but in reality they did it together. He worked as a clerk, electrical salesman and owner of Austin Electric for 13 years before retiring at age 47. They traveled extensively across the US, wintering in Tucson many years. Wherever they went, they met life long friends. He loved telling stories of travels in their motor home. Dad was graced with a tremendous sense of humor; loved practical jokes, had a gift for numbers and the memory of a 30 year old even at 91. Wherever he went he always had a warm affectionate smile and something nice to say. He was loved by everyone and will be missed by all. A memorial service will be held at the Dante Club, 2330 Fair Oaks Blvd, Tuesday December 18th at 11:00 AM. Reception to follow.

It came as a shock to learn that Merle Austin passed away in December, 2018.

What a very fine person he was. I remember him as a great basketball player at McClatchy High School. I don't believe they ever lost a game, and I saw every game - They were real Champions.

He was a really fine person. and he will be missed by many.

To know them was to love them. They were so full of love and shared that with all who had the privilege to know them. They are together again, Merle and Vi; they were bright lights of love and our world is dimmer in their absence but the other side must be that much brighter now!

Just wanted you to know how wonderful your father was. It has been a very long time since I have seen you all. Your father was a helpful and loving when I was just a teenager. My father and my mother and my sister are all waiting at Heavens Gate to welcome him. Frank and Eunice and Cathy Strein. What a wonderful reunion we will have when we join our families. Sending you loving thoughts. Phyllis Hileman
