Miguel Unzueta Obituary

UNZUETA, Miguel H. September 29, 1925 - September 12, 2014 It is with great sadness that we announce the unexpected death of Miguel H. Unzueta at the age of 88. Survived by his beloved wife Eliza, of 41 years, their son Dr. Miguel Angel Unzueta and stepdaughter Marcela Villar (Oscar). He is also survived by his children from a previous marriage: Raquel Aguilar (Robert), Ruben Unzueta (Maria) and Raul Unzueta (Sylvia), 3 sisters: Edmunda, Roberta and Isabel, 11 grandchildren, 5 great-grandchildren, 1 great-great-grandson, many nieces, nephews and extended family. Preceded in death by his brother, Cesario Unzueta. Miguel was born in Santa Barbara, CA to Monico and Matilde Hernandez Unzueta. When he was a very young child his family moved back to Las Herreras, Durango, Mexico. He returned to the USA as a young man. He was a man of strong work ethics and worked for Setzer Lumber Mill for 14 years prior to opening the signature Caballo Blanco Restaurant in 1961. His sons, Ruben and Raul continue to own and operate the Caballo Blanco Restaurant. Although retired he would often go to the restaurant to visit with customers and family. In his younger years he was an avid horseman and named his restaurant after his favorite white horse, Palomo. He was one of the founders of the first Charro Association of Sacramento. In his leisure time he loved cooking, reading, especially books on Mexican history and his bible. He greatly enjoyed conversing with family and friends about his past, current events and the bible. In his later years he also enjoyed gardening and canning fruit. He lived life to the fullest until the very end and will be greatly missed. Visitation will be held on Saturday September 20, 2014 from 10:00 a.m. to 1:00 pm with the Funeral Service at 2:00 p.m. at East Lawn Elk Grove Memorial Park and Mortuary, 9189 E. Stockton Blvd, Elk Grove, CA 95624 (916) 732-2031.

Miguel gave me my first job as a teenager. He paid me 1.60 an hour . My first job was washing dishes and he told me I had to start from the bottom up. I worked my way up eventually helping prep the food then helping to fill orders. The highlight was when I believe Roy was suppose to open on a Sunday morning and he was running late so I had to get all the food set up in the steam table and heat up fryer ,etc. That whole experience working for Miguel at the Caballo Blanco shaped my future and I opened my first restaurant at 19 years old and continued in the restaurant business for 20 years. I am so blessed to have met Miguel and will forever be grateful to him for giving me the opportunity to work for him.
My deepest condolences to the Unzueta family. You are all in my prayers.

I recognize the name and have met a number of family members during my years in Sacramento. Also, enjoyed eating at the restaurant many times. All my sympathy,
