CRAIG BOWEN Obituary

Craig Howard Bowen 1951 ~ 2010 BOUNTIFUL- Craig Bowen passed away February 17, 2010 after a valiant battle with an aggressive form of prostate cancer.Born September 25, 1951 in Salt Lake City, Utah, he was a true and faithful friend and a good husband and father. His lifelong interest was rock art and he served on the board of URARA for many years. He led field trips and took many photographs, working to protect Utah's rock art. He lived his life without regrets, and made the best life he could for himself and his family. He enjoyed hiking in the outdoors and sharing his knowledge of special places with others. He married Nina Dee Moss December 20, 1974 and had three children- Joseph Howard Kyle Bowen, Jacob Scott Bowen, and Catherine Christine Bowen (Kate). Craig was a kind and thoughtful person who never judged. He had friends all over the country who admired these qualities and loved to spend time with him. He was preceded in death by his family- father, Howard Reid Bowen, mother, Wilma Webb Bowen and brother, Richard Lee Bowen. A family graveside service was held Friday, February 18, 2010 at the Bountiful City Cemetery, under the direction of Russon Brothers Bountiful Mortuary. In lieu of flowers, Craig has requested donations be made to URARA, PO Box 511324, SLC, UT 84151. These funds will be used to protect rock art, which was Craig's lifelong passion.

Not sure what to say?

Craig was a man for all seasons. I grew up with Craig. We skied, golfed, double dated and all the other things guys do. Craig and his wonderful wife Nina introduced me to the beauty and adventure of the deserts of Utah. The Bowens and my family shared many a camp fire and I'll always have those memories. My thanks go to the Bowens. You're wonderfull, soft spoken and kind people.

Dear Nina, Joe, Jake and Katie--We are so sad to hear of Craig's passing and your great loss. It is a tremendous loss to all of us in the Rock Art community and especially to those of us who new and loved him. Many wonderful memories come flooding back of the good times we had in the field with him and your family. He had an incredible memory and an uncanny ability to find the most remote of sites and glyphs. Incredibly knowledgeable! We loved Craig and will miss him more than words can say. You all are in our thoughts and prayers. With love and affection, Jesse & Judy Warner

Regretably, I never met Craig, although my son has been close to Kathryn for many years. She is always ready with a story or memory of her childhood and the many camping trips they shared. I would like to express my sorrow and deepest sympathy for this lovely, strong family. May Craig's teachings and his wisdom carry his dear children along in their paths through life. If there is anything I can do Nina, please let me know. My family would love to help with anything. Cherish the memories..."Memory is a way of holding onto the things you love, the things you are, the things you never want to lose"...we are thinking of you.

It is virtually impossible to express Craig and Nina's contributions to preserving and public education regarding rock art, better described as native American graphic communication on the cliffs and rocks of this nation. We miss him deeply, and grieve with Nina and family for the loss of this kind, caring and brilliant man.

We are very sorry to read about Nina's husband, Craig, passing away too early in life. Although we never met Craig we know Nina through our business and thank her for the information about rock art in the area. Our most heart-felt condolenses to Nina and family.
