Shigeru Matsukawa Obituary

Shigeru "Doc" Matsukawa
Gone Fishing No More Limits
As a child I will always remember our dad smiling then asking "Did you do the best you could?" This question defined who we became and just how great a dad he was. As kids, and now adults, we were always up for new challenges, and adventures because success or failure, all that mattered was doing our best. It's hard to describe growing up in an environment where you were never judged or criticized. It made us want to do our best, not because you had to, but because you wanted to. So many wonderful memories, at mirror lake, as our father setup our fishing poles, and patiently waited while we ate marshmallows. A road trip, sitting in a small town diner laughing at his many jokes. Watching daytime soap operas while he polished contact lenses. Eating dinner with a family or visitor that he met at church, thinking, who are these people. Laughing and smiling as we learned about them and what brought them to Utah. Watching the Utes play, eating a bucket of chicken or pizza while he laughed and complimented my cooking skills. We know you are setting up our fishing poles for us (No more fishing limits, Dad!) Also, making sure mom is getting real hamburgers (not healthy veggie burgers) for our family dinner with all the dogs and new friends you have made.
We would like to thank family and friends for their support. Also, the staff at the Ogden Veterans Nursing Home (A-Wing) and Bristol Hospice for their wonderful care of our father. With special thanks to Shig's hospice nurse Laurel.
The family will receive friends Tuesday May 8, 2012 6-8 p.m. at the Japanese Church of Christ 268 West 100 South.
A Memorial service will be held Wednesday May 9, 2012 6 p.m. at the Japanese Church of Christ, please join us for dinner following the service.

Your Dad is Amazing! I have never met him in person, but have been fortunate to be friends and work with his sons Andy and Jon. You can tell what great parents they have from the way they conduct their lives. Sorry for your loss and thanks for sharing some insights into his life.

Andy,Your family has lost a great man who I remember so well from the days when you and Brooke played HH Hockey. But, my fondest memory was the luncheon our families shared when you and Brooke graduated from the "U". Having our very different W.W.II fathers present, sharing their memories, was priceless...

My family was lucky to have Dr. Matsukawa as our talented optometrist for many years. He was a great man who served our country in World War II. He will be missed by many. He was smart and witty, and was always concerned for the well being of everyone.

Andy,
Doc was a good friend from my days as a student at Westminster 1954 - 58. we had spent many an evenings discussing his search prior to his acceptance of Jesus as his Lord and Savior. there was always time for any friend in need. he was the basketball mentor for us Chinese students from SF. he was a major factor in the development of the YA's of the Church. he may "talk" a lot, but Doc CARES a lot.
am certain that he is now with God within God's Mansion.

What a lovely tribute to what sounds like an amazing man. He'd be so proud of his 'job well done'.
