Peter Suess Obituary

March 29, 1946 - September 26, 2019
Peter Suess was born March 29, 1946 in Neenah, WI and passed away on September 26, 2019, surrounded by his loving family after a courageous ten year battle with pancreatic cancer.
He was a proud graduate of Bishop Miege School in 1964, along with his high school sweetheart and wife of over 50 years, Martha.
Peter served in the U.S. Army from 1966-1968. He graduated from the University of Kansas in May 1972 and never failed to let everyone know how proud he was of his Kansas Jayhawks. Peter loved to talk with everyone he met, and that helped establish many great friendships during his life.
He loved life with his spouse Martha who he married in 1969. That marriage resulted in three wonderful children. David, his spouse Shannon and their two children Abbey and Lauren; Sarah, her spouse Adam and children Avery, Owen and Cooper; Molly, and her spouse Kevin and children, Ryan and Casey. Nothing brought him greater joy than time with his family.
He is also survived by his brother Phil Suess and his family. Peter was blessed to have great relationships with numerous members of his extended family.
Peter was very generous with his time by giving back to his Community. He volunteered with numerous organizations including; Loaves and Fishes, Holy Trinity Cancer Support Group, American Cancer Society, University of Kansas Alumni Association, and others. For the past ten years he and Martha have been actively involved with the Pancreatic Cancer Action Network. Peter was a familiar face at events and took advantage of opportunities to spread the inspirational message of hope for patients and families. Peter felt deep compassion for patients and caregivers dealing with this disease relying on his faith in God to carry him through.
The family is so appreciative of all of the support, love and caring that Peter received from all the healthcare professionals and friends during his life.
In lieu of flowers the family is requesting donations to the San Antonio PanCan PurpleStride 5k on November 16 at Fiesta Texas. You can sign up and join the ""Peter's Pride"" team at http://support.pancan.org/goto/peterspride.
Visitation will be on Monday, September 30th from 5pm until 7pm followed by a Rosary at Porter Loring North. Catholic Mass will be held on Tuesday October 1, 2019 at Holy Trinity Catholic Church beginning at 10am, followed by a luncheon at the church.

Dear Martha and Family: Ever since I met Peter is 1976 at an Iowa tailgate party, I have looked at Pete as an older brother I never had. Pete would come to Iowa football games to see his Brother and My best Friend Phil. Pete would always be happy smiling and supportive. He has been a great roll model and spokesman for Pancreatic cancer, by always carrying himself with dignity thoughtfulness and pride. Peter was a fighter and one of the strongest men I have know. Vanessa and I will miss him dearly. He will always live on in our hearts.

Dear Martha,
You may not remember me, I've not been the best attendee at the Cancer Support group at church - but Peter was a huge comfort to me as I started my breast cancer journey. His kind words of advice and positive attitude were a light of hope for both me and my husband. I'll never forget Peter saying to me, "Even in my darkest moments I know that I can reach out my hand and know that God is with me". I held onto those words as I endured my surgery and chemo therapy - and yes, I did reach out my had and I felt God's presence. Peter was indeed a very wise and special person. I feel honored to have met you both. We will keep you and your family in our prayers. God Bless you all! Sincerely, Molly and Dode Harvey

Dear Martha, David, Sarah, and Molly,
Peter was the model for who God created to be the perfect husband, father, grandfather and friend. He was a valiant warrior in his battle against pancreatic cancer, and yet, he didn't let the disease define him. He loved God, family, friends, life and the University of Kansas, in fact, he probably has our Heavenly Father wearing a University of Kansas Jersey. He left everyone he met with a positive impression. His absence will leave a big void in all our live's, but not nearly as big a void as he will in your's. Rejoice in all the wonderful memories that Peter has left with you. Our love and prayers are with you.

Dear Martha, I am so very sorry to hear of Peters passing. Peter was someone we always looked up to as being a longtime Survivor of PC. I'm the Affiliate Chair of our Milwaukee Affiliate and spoke to Peter numerous times at our PanCan training. He was the light, the hope of all those fighting. He is now at peace and he's got a huge purple family of Angels taking care of him now. My prayers and thoughts go to you and your whole family. His memories will last on forever to keep his light shining. Love to you all, and Peter will be missed by everyone.

Martha and all of Pete's family. Martha .. like Simon who helped carry Jesus cross... you have helped Pete carry his cross. You both were a 'light' illuminating the Lord's goodness to the world... a blessing to each other and for all who know and love you. Here's a poem.. I hope it brings each of you comfort:
Death is nothing at all
I have only slipped away into the next room
I am I and you are you
Whatever we were to each other
That we are still
Call me by my own familiar name
Speak to me in the easy way you always used
Put no difference into your tone
Wear no forced air of solemnity or sorrow
Laugh as we always laughed
At the little jokes we always enjoyed together
Play, smile, think of me, pray for me
Let my name be ever the household word that it always was
Let it be spoken without effort
Without the ghost of a shadow in it
Life means all that it ever was
There is absolute unbroken continuity
What is death but a negligible accident?
Why should I be out of mind
Because I am out of sight?
I am waiting for you for an interval
Somewhere very near
Just around the corner
All is well.
Nothing is past; nothing is lost
One brief moment and all will be as it was before
How we shall laugh at the trouble of parting when we meet again!

Martha and family, I'm so sorry to hear of Peter's passing. I met him at
PanCan's COLT training a few years ago. His passion for finding a cure for pancreatic cancer and supporting those with pc was amazing. We will fight on in his memory.

My sincere condolences to Martha, Sarah and the entire Suess family. Peter and Martha were my neighbors for 20 years and we also attended the same Church. When I moved to Austin three years ago, I was so surprised to see Peter and Martha at our neighborhood pool. They were visiting their daughter Sarah and her family. It has been great to have made a in Sarah and her family and I feel so thankful to have another Suess in our new neighborhood.

Peter was always so friendly and we often talked over the fence. He was always curious about whatever home project I had going on at my house. When he first began his battle with pancreatic cancer, I was always struck by his amazing resolve to learn all there was to know about this disease and to do all he could to fight. I was in awe every time he bounced back and return stronger only to have a relapse. Every relapse just meant he would fight again. I will never forget his neighborly talks, his courage and strength and his wisdom.

Love and prayers to all of Suess family. ❤
