David Bradstreet Obituary

MISSION BEACH - David Bradstreet passed away peacefully in his home on January 1, 2023, after a nearly 3-year illness with Esophageal Cancer. He was born In Lander, Wyoming on April 24, 1936, to Lee and Thelma Rook Bradstreet. His family left Lander when he was 3 years old and lived in Oregon, Nevada, and Utah before settling in Stockton, CA in 1944. While in Stockton, David helped his family run a grocery business and worked on their walnut farm while he attended school.
When David was 20 years old, he branched out on his own and headed to the beaches in San Diego. He began working for Rohr Aircraft and held a number of positions. He completed his undergraduate degree at San Diego State University and received a Master's Degree in Public Administration from National University. Additionally, he received a teaching certificate and taught recreational classes at both Southwestern College and San Diego State University.
In 1962 David began his career in City Government in Chula Vista as part of their Parks and Recreation Department, working in all facets of recreation programming. In 1970 he was selected as the city's Parks and Golf Course Superintendent. In January 1979, David was hired as the City of Carlsbad's Park and Recreation Director. For the next 19 years, he and his talented staff embarked on an aggressive park development program. These efforts played a major role in developing Carlsbad's Park system, consisting of over 480 acres of parks and facilities which have played host to thousands of recreation program enthusiasts within Carlsbad and throughout San Diego County. In June 1994 David further expanded his responsibilities by assuming the position of Community Service Director which included many Public Works Functions as well as the Park and Recreation Departments. After 35 years of public service, David retired in 1997.
His recreational interests during his life were many. He was an avid water and snow skier. He tried his hand at fly-fishing, but found out you didn't catch a lot of fish with a fly. He played recreational basketball and softball, even injuring several fingers as a player in Over-the-Line tournaments. His absolute two loves in sports were sand volleyball and golf. He always tried to be paired in volleyball with rated players and went on to win several major 2-man tournaments in the South Bay and in Mexico. In golf, he was known as a grinder who had a good short game. He had four holes in one. David often said, if you play long enough, you're bound to get one hole-in-one somewhere!
He is survived by his loving wife Mary, daughter Kelly, sisters Mary Alice Wampler (Robert) and Silver Penny Lamb (David), and an extended family as well as many friends who adored him. He was the ultimate role model for living the good life and undeniably lived it to the fullest while motivating and inspiring others.
The family is planning a celebration of life on January 21st. In lieu of flowers, it is suggested donations be made to the American Diabetes Association to support research and cures for childhood Type 1 Diabetes. Always remember David's bigger-than-life personality, toast him with an itsy bitsy (NFL Silver Bacardi and diet coke) sharing kindness to all, both friends, family, and strangers, and do this in honor of him.
"So I commend the enjoyment of life because nothing is better for a man under the sun than to eat and drink and be glad" - ECCLESIASTES 8:15

Hawaiian shirts, a commanding presence, and that handsome smile. I was blessed to work with David for a number of years when I served on the Chula Vista Park an d Recreation Commission in the mid 70´s. Emerson Hall, Jerry Foncerada, and David Bradstreet were a pleasure to work with. Dave and I attended a number of P and R conventions and Dave made them such fun. A consummate professional, he knew the business as well as anyone with whom I worked over the years. I last saw Dave many years ago when at a casino at Northshore Lake Tahoe I heard this booming voice call out my name. We spent time together that evening and sadly, that was our last meeting. David was one of God´s best people and you only need to read these tributes to understand how much he meant to so many. RIP Dave. I know heavens parks will be in great hands. Thoughts and prayers to his family

We´re so saddened to hear of Dave´s passing. Thank you for the opportunity to read these wonderful comments and share our own reflections. I´m writing this with my 90 year old mother, Ann Kulchin, who served on the Carlsbad City Council from 1980-2012.

Mom has so many wonderful memories of working with Dave. One of the first would have been in April 1980, election night. We were gathered in the council chambers and Dave was tasked with recording the official precinct counts as they came in. Remember, it was 1980, so the figures came from the county over the phone and were recorded on a chalkboard! Dave´s larger than life personality was present then. As Mom shares, "he was a joy to be around; he would look at you and smile and you couldn´t help but smile back!"

We hope the many memories of happier times remain strongest in your hearts.

I am so sad to hear of my friends passing. David was one of the good guys and someone who I always looked up and respected in our Parks & Recreation profession. Always looking for a good time, we certainly found them at Parks and RecreationConferences and SCMAF events.
My sincerest condolences his family.

I first met Dave Bradstreet in 1969 at a Park and Recreation function hosted by Dave while he worked for the City of Chula Vista. Our friendship continued until his death on January 1st. Dave was the epitome of what a Parks and Recreation Professional should be. He served as a mentor to so many of us. He was gifted with a larger then life personality that engulfed anyone that was near him. He is the only person I've ever known that could walk into an Auditorium filled to capacity to speak and within minutes have the entire audiences attention captured in interest and laughter.
I last saw Dave a few months ago when a group of friends and fellow Park and Recreation retirees visited with him and his lovely wife Mary at their beautiful home. Inspite of his Cancer and the obvious pain and discomfort he was in he never complained but shared his love of life with each of us. He told me, "Donnie I wake up each morning being grateful for a new day". Truly a one of a kind man who captured the friendship and love of so many.

I was fortunate to work with and for Dave in the late 60s at Chula Vista Rec., CVR, and learning of his passing has brought back many good memories of that experience. He was a good man and a true leader with a good heart, may he rest in peace.
