I was the maintenance NCO for Echo Co, 1-30 IN BN in Iraq and in the 11th Engineer BN during OIF I. A lot of people do not know that John was in SFC Paul Smith's platoon during OIF I. SFC Smith is the first Soldier to receive the Congessional Medal of Honor for actions during this current war. I can still remember how I felt when I heard that John had passed and thinking "I just talked to him yesterday" John, you are missed, admired and respected.

I did not have the privilege of knowing Sgt John Mele, but I do grieve over the passing of his life and I want to honor him for the life he lived and gave for us all. Future generations will be blessed with life and freedom because of him. Our soldiers are the sons and daughters of all Americans and we are very very proud of each one. I will be praying for John's family and friends as long as I have breath in me to do so. I encourage you to close your eyes when you are missing him and remember the times you had with him. You will see his smile, hear his voice, hear him laugh again. John, Thank you for your ultimate of all sacrifices, the giving of your life. We will never forget you. God bless. I hope to meet you when I step from this life into the place prepared for me by Christ, on the other side and I plan to finally meet you there. Until then, rest in peace, son.

Holding you all in my thoughts and prayers.
The Wind on The Downs
“I like to think of you as brown and tall,
As strong and living as you used to be,
In khaki tunic, Sam Brown belt and all,
And standing there and laughing down at me.
Because they tell me, dear, that you are dead,
Because I can no longer see your face,
You have not died, it is not true, instead
You seek adventure in some other place.
That you are round about me, I believe;
I hear you laughing as you used to do,
Yet loving all the things I think of you;
And knowing you are happy, should I grieve?
You follow and are watchful where I go.”
(Written by Marian Allen during World War l )
Two lines that I wish you to keep near your heart…….
“You seek adventure in some other place.
That you are round about me, I believe”
I did not know John, but I am remembering
his service. He is my hero. !

The Other Side
i'm over on the other side
where life and death softly divide.
left my skin and bones behind
now i'm over on the other side.
can you feel me there with you?
my breath is gone but i'm not through.
loved you then and i still do
from over on the other side.
i can fly. really fly.
below the earth ... all through the sky.
tell em all i did not die.
i'm just over on the other side.
it's good here on the other side.
the sweetest songs...the bluest skies.
thank you for the tears you cried
but it's good here on the other side.
i can fly. really fly. below the earth...all through the sky.
tell em all i did not die.
i'm just over on the other side
the world is smaller than a needle's eye.
where life and death softly divide.
when you leave your skin and bones behind
i'll be waiting on the other side.
i can fly. really fly. below the earth ... all through the sky.
go tell em all i did not die.
i'm just over on the other side.

I am so lifted by all the kind words and sympathy that all of you have expressed in this site.Johnny was a great son full of dreams and great expectations. He lived life on full throtle balls to the walls and he loved his family and country. He loved his wife and child and was a fine daddy and husband. Is he a hero. I think he is. Did he die in vain . I think not. Once again thank-you all.

To the Family and Friends of this Soldier:
I will stand in grief with this soldier's family to honor him. For every fallen HERO there is a bright star that shines in the evening sky to remind us of the cherished gift we were given – even if for too short a time.
My heart breaks again as I sign yet another guest book of another courageous young soldier who gave their life so selflessly. I wish I never found myself in a position to have to sign another guestbook for the rest of my life, but I promised Brent that neither he nor any like him would be forgotten and so I will continue until the day there is no longer the need.
We lost our son SFC Brent A. Adams on 12/1/05 and it seems like yesterday. I wish so badly there were things I could say to you right now to make the pain you are feeling go away, but I know first hand there simply are no words that will bring you the comfort and peace your heart aches for. Just know that you are not alone. My heart, thoughts, and prayers are with you all as you go through this tragedy moment by moment and as you mourn this loss.
We don't know each other, will probably never meet, but will forever be united in the loss of our Heroes. We have, unfortunately joined a group none of us wanted to join, an ever-growing group of families in this situation. May God grant you peace and strength to get through this and be able once again to smile at a memory rather than have only the tears that flow so easily now. To be so proud of your loved one and so saddened at the same time is a mix of emotions very difficult to deal with as our hearts both burst with pride and pain together.
I am sorry that I never knew your soldier personally. While they can never be replaced, neither will they ever be forgotten. You must trust that sometime, someday the loving memories you have will help to sustain you and help you go on. This courageous soldier will forever be your Angel watching over you all for the rest of your lives. It's what brings me some measure of peace and comfort and I hope it will you as well.
To his family and friends in pain, I offer this comfort: When you find yourself in that dark sorrowful place, think not only of how you will miss him, but instead recall the years, days, hours and minutes gifted to you by his presence. The one thing that cannot be taken from you is your wonderful memories that now will mean more than ever.
If you ever want to talk, I'm only an e:mail away and would love for you to tell me more about your Hero.
God Bless this soldier and family who gave all and God Bless legacy.com for setting up this site where families can so quickly share their condolences and prayers with others like themselves.

Sgt. John Mele was a GREAT soldier and a wonderful husband and father. He loved his family dearly. I am one of the many that knew him and one of the lucky ones that works with his wonderful wife, and have heard the wonderful things she has said about him. Just an all around great guy. He will be sorely missed, and Jennie said it right when she said "He died doing what he loved best, Being a soldier" What more could one ask for. God Bless you SGT. John Mele. We will take good care of Jennie & Clarissa. Rest assured I am sure we will hear of many more GREAT stories, and in time might even hear some of the funny ones. REST IN PEACE.

Jennie, Clarissa, and all John's family,
Just know that we are thinkging of you and you all are in my prayers.
John was such a wonderful dad and husband, and as far as young married couples go, I have NEVER seen two people more in love with each other. Jennie, I know how much you love John, and I hope that you guys can begin to heal now.
My favorite memory of John was a time he was reading "cat in the hat" book. The way he was reading it was hillarious, and Jennie and I were just laughing at him so hard. I will never forget it, and I will never forget him.
Thank you John for your friendship, laughs, and sacrifice. And Thank you Jennie for your sacrifice, we all know it was the ultimate one. I miss you and I love you forever!!

Dear family members - We are so sorry for the loss of John. Having had a brother killed in Viet Nam in 1969 I know the sorrow you are experiencing. Our son Paul is serving in Iraq now, and he wanted the family to know he was able to attend the Memorial service there for John. He said it was a wonderful service and a video was made, which will be sent to the family. Paul and John were able to meet each other during the funeral of John's grandfather and Paul's uncle John. I am one of (many) first cousins of John William's father, Michael Mele. Michael and I grew up in a large family in the Washington D.C. area. Michael's father (John William's grandfather) and my mother were brother and sister, and loved each other very much. I remember growing up with Michael and thinking what a charming young man he was. I did not have the chance to meet John William, and I really regret that. I do know that Uncle Johnny (John William's grandfather) as well as my father and many others in our family are extremely proud of John, and we consider him a hero. I am just sorry I didn't have the chance to meet this fine young man. I have told my 5 year old son that he has a relative who was a soldier and a hero, and he is pretty interested in that...Our hearts go out to Michael, Linda and to John's brothers from your cousin Gina (LaRita's daughter), husband Whitney and our son Jack here in California.

Wrapped in the integrity of service to our nation and the inestimable values of duty, honor and country, your American hero stood on a wall of freedom for us all. To the family of SGT Mele,
I worked with John during his deployment to OIF III as part of the DIVENG cell. I was in the GI&S Cell under DIVENG. I pulled several long shifts of guard duty with him. His current commander was at the time a staff officer in DIVENG. Out of the entire DIVENG, then SPC Mele and CPT T were easily the most professional and personable Soldiers in DIVENG. I could always have a good conversation with SGT Mele. The Army has lost a great Soldier, and a better person. My deepest sympathy and gratitude go to his family and fellow Soldiers. My prayers are with you.

To the family of Sgt. John Mele,
Words cannot convey my pain and sorrow for the loss of John. My son Joshua was killed In Iraq also in June. They were together at Ft. Stewart and then in Iraq. My son thought alot of him. I regret ever getting the opportunity to meet him along with Josh's other brothers still there. I have prayed every day and every night for their safe return. Please know that your family is in our hearts and prayers. This is a journey I have prayed so hard to keep anyone else from traveling. I wish I had some words of wisdom, but I know at this time words seem to be a foreign language to us. But please know that the tears I shed for Josh are also for John. If you ever would like to talk or just another who understands please dont hesitate to contact me. Sometimes after family and friends move on we are still stuck in a void. But it helps to have another to walk that long road with you.

I am writing to offer my condolences to your family over the loss of your HERO Sgt John Mele. I lost my son in Iraq on May 6/2007, so I can well understand your pain of losing a loved one so dear.
When things settle down, I recommend that you contact a man named Michael Reagan @
www.michaelgreaganartist.com
He will draw one portrait of the fallen soldier. He does this for free and will draw any picture of your choosing. He has drawn presidents and other celebrities. My husband and I got one and it has helped me with the healing process. Michael is a truly gifted artist that captures the very essence of the person he draws. I look at my picture everyday and it gives me a connection that I cannot explain.
I pray you will be guided by a higher power to give you peace, comfort and strength in this time.

GOD Bless you and your family. Your soldier was a true American Hero and we are all very proud of his service.

There is nothing that I can say or do to take away the pain or bring you peace in your time of sorrow, but I will offer you and your family my heart felt condolences. I also offer you my prayers that in time the pain will easy and the memories of your HERO will carry you through each day and night. I want to thank your HERO, for his/her selfless act of becoming a member of the armed forces, his/her willingness to defend the United States of America, all that we hold sacred and for the sacrifice that will forever be etched in the memories of all those who knew him/her. Though tears can never bring him/her back, we hope that our tears express our gratitude for the sacrifice that he/she made and our sorrow at his/her passing. I believe for every fallen HERO there is a star shining brightly up above to remind us of the precious gift we were given.
Your mission on earth is complete and you are now a member of GOD’s Heavenly armed forces. Stand down brave warrior and take your rightful place in Heaven with all the HEROES who have passed before.
I made a special promise to LE RON A. WILSON, a dear family friend who joined the Army with three other friends, one of whom is my son (Le Ron was killed in action on 07/06/07 at the age of 18) on the day he was laid to rest as I touched his coffin, that I would never forget him nor would I forget those that gave their lives for our country before him, with him and after him and so when I came across www.legacy.com, I thought what a great way to keep my promise to Le Ron, so I will continue to leave tributes in each guest book until the day there is no longer the need to leave these tributes to a FALLEN HERO.
REST IN PEACE, HERO, YOU WILL NEVER BE FORGOTTEN!!

The price Sgt. John Mele and his family have paid for this country and for freedom, Will Never Be Forgotten. Please know how Deeply Sorry I am to learn of the loss of your Brave Young Soldier.
May John rest safely now, in the Loving Care of God and may the Peace of God be with the Mele family.
There will Never Be Enough Ways to Humbly Thank these Young Heroes for their Sacrifices, my brother among them. Killed in action in Vietnam in 1967.
