John Thomas Obituary

John Edward Thomas, 62, died peacefully, Tuesday, June 6, at home surrounded by his loving wife and children.

JT was born in Savannah, Ga. and raised on Wilmington Island.

He graduated from Sol C. Johnson High School in 1974.

He worked in the food and beverage industry for many years and owned Half Moon Lawn Care and JThomas Catering.

And was a seniority card holder of ILA 1475 at Georgia Ports Authority.

JT's love for life was evident in many ways. On any given night he could be found throwing horseshoes at the American Legion on Tybee or with 'the guys' on Whitemarsh Island. He loved meeting with his friends at the Crow Bar or at the neighborhood dock for a cold one.

JT was an avid fisherman. He loved to fish so much that it was never a surprise to find him standing on the winner's podium of local fishing tournaments. It even got to the point his friends begged him to sit out the next tournament to give others a chance. He was fondly known as the 'trout slayer'.

His love for UGA football ran deep. In the fall months, if he wasn't in the river, or in the tree stand, there was a good chance he was in Athens attending a game. "Who's that coming down the track.?'

But his biggest love was for his family.

Surviving are his wife, Ann Marie, son Jonathan, daughter Jessica (Dan), son Joshua (Courtney), daughter Lindsay, and son Dylan.

His beloved grandchildren, Connor and Bennett Thomas, Jaylyn Thomas, and Jamison Clements.

JT was preceded in death by his parents, David Edward Thomas, and Sara Nesmith Thomas Lee and Jim Lee.

There will be a Celebration of Life at the Tybee Island American Legion Post 154, Friday, June 9th, at 11 am. As befitting JT, no ties please.

The family extends appreciation to Dr. Grant Lewis and Dr. Joshua McKenzie, the Lewis Cancer Center, and Hospice Savannah for their dedicated care.

Remembrances can be sent to: The Ricky McAllaster Foundation, 4 Creek Marsh Lane, Savannah 31411, or www.rip10.com.

My aunt Willa Mae Nesmith Lanier from Statesboro and I want to offer our condolences to the family. We knew him as "little Johnny" since his grandfather Nesmith was Johnny. My aunt and Mother were first cousins with John's grandmother Ethel Nesmith and we were very close to Ethel until her later years. I remember going to Tybee when I was a little girl with Johnny and his mother Sara. I'm so sorry that I did not reconnect with John after we moved to Savannah in 2013. I would have loved to find him and talk to him about old times with his mother and grandmother. I'm so sorry for your loss.
