I worked for Brian at Seafirst for several years in the late 80's and early 90's. I left to manage our properties in Cannon Beach and was just wondering about him and pulled up his obituary with the beautiful picture of Haystack (which I am sitting in my home looking out the window at right now). I would occasionally run into him and his wife on Maui or Gearhart. He was a man of integrity, honesty, competence and caring. I am happy to see he lived such a long and fulfilled life.

Thank you father-out-law for the many times we gathered around the table while Gayle's delicious dishes steamed and made us all hungry. Before those dishes could be passed, everyone turned their heads toward you. You would cross yourself and repeat the ancient blessing, "BLESS us, O lord, and these Thy gifts which we are about to receive from Thy bounty through Christ Our Lord. - Amen". Every Sunday without fail, we all chimed in with a hearty "Amen!" You could not have had a more beautiful wife. She has the gift of making everyone feel comfortable and welcomed and your children have enriched the world with their thoughtfulness and curiosity. You were a classic patriarch. I had no patriarch in my family so I was awed by it and awed by the traditions. (Sometimes, intimidated too)
You introduced me to some great mysteries. "Tinker, Tailor, Soldier Spy"
It's been many years since I was apart of your traditions. It's been many years since I got to ask the question, 'what are you reading?'. Yet, I can still see the faces of everyone who gathered around your table. I can feel the hearty laughter and my own awkwardness. I can smell the melting wax of birthday candles, and hear the voice of your father-in-law singing "Some Enchanted Evening." I can see your first grandchild Emma sitting in a high chair and blowing out a single candle. Then along came Ryan and he got his candle too. The table got bigger and bigger.
I am grateful for those years and for gathering around that table where the China matched and the serving spoons were made of silver. "How about those Mariners?"

Brian approved my first business loan at Dexter Horton branch in the early '70's when your reputation and a handshake was good enough. After signing he stated "just remember -#1, this is a loan not a gift, and #2, do not B.S thy banker. I spoke with him last year and reminded him that those comments have remained as a guidance in all my years in business. Brian was always a source of help when needed. He was a good man, was appreciated and will be missed.
