Malcolm Randall "Randy" West

Malcolm West Obituary

Malcolm Randall "Randy" WEST Malcolm Randall "Randy" West, 77, passed away peacefullyat home with his family by his side on August 7, 2009. He was born August 11, 1931 at home on his parent's farm in the beautiful rolling hills just outside Tullahoma, Tennessee. He had been battling Pulmonary Fibrosis for 4 years. Randy's parents instilled in him a strong work ethic, which served him well throughout his life. In his youth, he worked hard on the family's farm, took on various part time jobs and worked his way up to assistant manager for Kroger Grocers by the time he was nineteen. In 1951, Randy left Kroger to enlist in the Navy where he served 4 years on the U.S.S. Los Angeles. While stationed in San Diego he met his wife of 55 years, Dolores. They were married in Tacoma, Washington in 1954. Shortly after, the young couple moved to Tennessee where they started a family. Randy took a job at Arnold Engineering Developmental Center in Tullahoma but the northwest soon beckoned and the family moved to Seattle in 1956 where Randy took a job at Boeing. The grocery business still in his blood, he went to work for the Food Giant Grocery company working his way up to Vice President by the time he retired in 1996. Randy was very active in the community and won many awards for his service and accomplishments. He was awarded Puget Sound Grocer of the year in 1978 and Washington State Grocer of the year in 1982. During his tenure at Food Giant he donated time and support to many local school programs and charities. He also sponsored a Senior Babe Ruth baseball team and continued his sponsorship into his retirement. Randy proudly belonged to the University Lion's Club and served as president from 1985 to 1986.He spent many hours helping with the annual Lion's Club Auction which raises funds to help the blind and sight impaired. After retirement Randy opened Milt's BBQ restaurant, dabbled part time in the grocery business, loved to fish for King salmon in Alaska, took his family to Australia and made yearly family trips to California's wine country. He also loved to play golf and made 2 hole-in-ones in his life during the same week in different states. His family includes his wife Dolores "Dee", his children Kathy, Pam and Randy, his daughter-in-law Julie, his grandchildren Kayleigh, Janson, Kendall and Conner, his twin sister Clara, his nephew Malcolm and his nieces Sharon and Debbie. We are eternally grateful to his caregivers Meghan and Sarah for their physical and emotional support. A memorial service will be held at 1:00 p.m. on Friday, August 28, at St. Luke's Lutheran Church, 515 South 312th Street, Federal Way, WA 98003. In lieu of flowers, donations in Randy's name can be made to the University Lion's Club or Franciscan Hospice and Palliative Care.

Randy was one of the most generous people I have known. He was not only generous with his " treasure" but also with his time.

We were sorry to hear about Randy. He was a great boss and a very kind person. It was a beautiful memorial. Ernie & I felt very priviledged to be taken on many conventions/trips with, Delores, Dick & Marilyn to Hawaii, Phoenix, Dallas and San Francisco. It was very educational & fun to attend the Food Dealer Conventions and to see what the industry was doing. I learned much about the grocery business that I had no knowledge about before I worked for Food Giant. I was able to explain to many friends what the grocery business is all about. I will never forget the time Richard, Norma, Ernie & I went as chaperones for the Food Giant Baseball Team to Ohio and we went to Canton to see the Football Hall of Fame. All of our family have enjoyed the University Lions Club Auctions, which Randy introduced us to. A member of Ernie's family, a great niece, is involved in the hearing school program. Our prayers & thoughts are with you all at this time.

Dear Delores & Family
I was so sorry to hear of Mr. West passing. I remember many good times with the West Family as a young girl. I have fond memories of being a "runner" with Pam at several of his auctions. I also remember the time that Mr. West had my mom make sand candle centerpieces for one of Randy's events. Those were the good ole' days. Hold on to the memories..........My thoughts and prayers are with all of you.

Dolores and family,

What beautiful and loving tributes were given for Randall. He definitely leaves a void in many lives. How fortunate so many were helped along by him. While I did not know him well, I feel fortunate to have had him a part of my life, if only on e-mail. I will miss him a great deal. My thoughts and prayers for you.

Dear Delores,
I was so sad to learn of Randy's death. I smile when I remember his amazing generous heart and spirit of giving. Of course the first thing that comes to mind is the fact that he had to pass the air port coming and going from work and the proximity of Food Giant to University of Washington Medical Center and the Lions Eye Bank. How many times did we wake him up in the morning asking him to pick up a package coming in from somewhere around the region? The calls also went out in the afternoons when we had to send donor tissue and we knew he would be leaving work and driving by SeaTac. He did this time and time again over many years. I also remember Christmas of 1977 when I got involved with some Metro bus drivers who had gotten their regular riders to donate items for families that would not have much at Christmas. I am not sure how this happened but I know that when I tried to come up with items for Christmas dinners for the families we were delivering to I called Randy and he invited me to shop at Food Giant. I am not talking about one or two turkeys and all the other stuff. This was many families, like 20. It was amazing. Welcomed me with open arms.
What an amazing teacher and example of community. What a loss for all of us. I send my deepest sympathy to you and your family. I hope the memories of Randy will be of comfort to you.

Mr. West offered me a chance to leave the retail world and open the first Washington State Lottery Sales window at the Wallingford Food Giant. It was quite a leap. Once that was established he then asked if I'd like to go to Dayton for training on a point of sale software system and start a new department. I said sure then asked "Where is Dayton?". When he said Ohio and saw my expression, he just laughed. It was the beginning of many years working in the Point of Sale system for Food Giant stores. Mr. West was a kind, giving person - a southern gentleman. He will be missed. My prayers are with the whole family.
