Bernard Simon Obituary

Bernard "Bud" Simon
July 7, 1921 - March 1, 2023
Bernard Simon died on the morning of March 1st, 2023 after having lived 101 years, and 237 days. He was preceded in death by his wife Inga who died in 2015. He resided in the Bay Area for more than 75 years, mostly in Pacifica and for the past several years was a resident of Peninsula del Rey in Daly City. He is survived by his nephews, Thomas Simon of Cuyahoga Fall, Ohio and John Fyotek of Iowa City, Iowa, grand nephews, Marek McLaughlin of Daly City, Tyler Fyotek of Iowa City and his many old and new friends.
Bernard served in the Marine Corps during World War II on Bougainville, Midway Island and in the Philippines. He was a founding member of the Marines Memorial Club in San Francisco. He was chosen by Honor Flight as one of the World War II veterans to be taken to Washington D.C. He retired from United Airlines in 1983 and had always liked to travel. He was an independent thinker, wrote poetry in his spare time, and was quite a raconteur. Memorials can be made in Bud's memory to the Marines Memorial Association, The V.F.W., The Honor Flight Bay Area Foundation or any veterans group.
A viewing will be held at Duggan's Serra Mortuary, 500 Westlake Ave., Daly City, on Tuesday March 14th from 4 to 8pm. A Memorial Service will be held the following day, again at Duggan's Serra Mortuary, Wednesday, March 15th at 4:00pm.

My sincere sympathy goes out to all the Simon family over the passing of a dear friend and distant relative to our family, Bernard Simon. After his sister and my great aunt, Collette's passing, I became a telephone friend to Bernard over the years. I will miss his upbeat personality and great stories. Sincerely, Granddaughter of Ada Casslo Plachy

I met Mr. Simon serendipitously when I worked for the City of Pacifica when he and Inga lived in Pacifica. Having many Marines in my family, we connected through the USMC and stories he shared of his service on the Solomon Islands and Bougainville. I know I got the PG, not R rated versions.
I switched jobs from Pacifica and he moved to Daly City after Inga died, but we remained in touch.
I took him to a Veterans Day event with my family one year, and my brother, now a retired USMC Sgt. Major, visited Mr. Simon and the residents of Peninsula Del Rey along with some Golden Gate Young Marines that afternoon.

I was so glad that he was selected to be a part of an Honor Flight to a man so well deserving.

We remained in touch even after I moved from California. I enjoyed our conversations and will miss them. I´m so glad our paths crossed fortuitously.

My condolences to the Simon Family and friends. I did not personally know Bernard but am a friend of his nephew, Tom Simon. I salute Bernard for his service in WWII. Through the efforts of men like Bernard and the entire U.S. military, my father Adolf Meeuwen was liberated from a Japanese POW camp deep in the jungles of Burma; a release without which I would not be alive.
