Cecilia Dawydiak Obituary

Cecilia Marie Muschi Dawydiak Died June 15, 2008 at home surrounded by family. "Sis" was diagnosed with lung cancer in October 2007. Born in SF on October 3, 1926, her parents were Ticinese Swiss immigrants, Mario and Catherine (Bazzuri) Muschi. Sis grew up with the late Mayors George Moscone, Joe Alioto, and former Assemblyman Charlie Meyers; all frequent visitors to the Muschi home. Sis attended Presentation Convent School, Presentation High School. She attended St. Joseph's College of Nursing under the U.S. Cadet Nurse Corps during WWII, and was proud of her Cadet uniform, her St. Joseph's nurse cape and pin. She fell in love with "Gene," a sailor she met at the USO Club in 1945 and they married in 1951. Sis then attended the University of San Francisco, and became one of 14 pioneering women, all registered nurses, to graduate in 1950; the first class of women. She worked at Maimonides Hospital and in the '50s became a pediatrics instructor at Mt. Zion's School of Nursing under Chair, Ganelle Griffin. When the school closed, Sis, the late Norma Muthe and Marion McDermott, were tapped by Ganelle to start CCSF's School of Nursing in the '60s. In the '70s she received a masters degree from San Francisco State University. Elected chair for the past 25 years, she recently went on sick leave due to her illness. Per Sis the faculty at CCSF are the best and brightest and CCSF's Nursing program is one of the most sought after two-year programs in California, if not the US. Sis also trained and showed Bloodhounds and she loved the SF Giants. She and Gene were among the first fans to buy charter seats for the new ballpark. Sis was preceded in death by her beloved husband of 56 years, Gene; and by brother, Achille Muschi; brother-in-law, Walter Dawydiak. Sis is survived by daughter and son-in-law, Leanna M. Dawydiak and Reno Rapagnani; son and daughter-in-law Eugene Dawydiak and Dianne Meconis; and son, Walter Dawydiak and daughter-in-law, Valerie Ammons. She leaves five grandchildren: Reno V. Rapagnani, Rose Ann Cecile Dawydiak-Rapagnani, John-Paolo Eugene Dawydiak-Rapagnani, Eugene Daniel Dawydiak, and Matthew William Dawydiak; and her beloved goddaughter Marlene. She is also survived by brother, Louis Muschi; and sisters-in-law, Blanche A. David, Marie Muschi, Pasqua Muschi and brother-in-law, John Dawydiak; in addition to nieces and nephews, and family in Ticino, Switzerland. Sis always told her students that we are "the center of the spoke". Her passion for nursing was immense and showed through her teaching. From the first day I met Sis, I was truly inspired and I will never forget all that she taught me. After seeing how great of a mentor and friend she was, I was very inspired to become an instructor myself in the future. When I started at CCSF, I didn't know how much or what I would get out of it, but now I can say that I definitely got more out of CCSF than I expected...it was a priviledge and honor having Sis as my mentor. My deepest sympathy to her family.

It was an honor to spend some time at sis's house for a few weeks when she went to Sweden. Through this I found out that sis does everything for her family and to also sets a good reputation at City College of San Francisco. Her advice to me was that I should pursue a higher degree because one day I will want to expand from floor nursing.
She was very kind to me and had so much energy.
She also told me to enjoy life as I am still young.
I will always remember sis and I wish sympathy to her family through this tough time. May she rest in peace and be happy in heaven.

For those of you who may be interested in how my mother came to be a Nurse please visit http://lhncbc.nlm.nih.gov/apdb/phsHistory/resources/cadetnurse/nurse.html
This web site is a very good description of the Cadet Nurse Corps established in 1943. My mother was a member of the Greatest Generation and went on to prove it every day for 62 years from the day she became an RN in 1946. .

Cis was such a presence at CCSF. I was in the nursing program that graduated 5/07, and even my family members at the ceremony commented on how dynamic Cis was. Cis was there to support us, guide us, and give us tough (sometimes very tough!) love when necessary, and all of her efforts will always be appreciated. My deepest sympathy to her family and loved ones, and may your happy memories of her comfort you during this difficult time. She will never be forgotten!

Deepest sympathy to the Dawydiak family, what is loved and held close is never far away. Thank you for sharing your wife gene, your mom, grandma, aunt, to us the ccsf nurses, we can only be the nurse we are today through her fight and passion for nursing. She taught us everything a book could never do, she is one in a million and i am blessed that i got to be her student and friend. I loved laughing with her, she will be missed, but her legend lives on. love Jenny Mao, CCSF Nursing c/o 2007

To the dear Leanna & Reno--
This is a very sad year for you both. My heart goes out to you. But, when I saw that graduation pix of "Sis" it became apparent where Leanna got her great smile. I thought you looked more like your dad until I saw all these pictures of your mom. You are very blessed to have had such wonderful parents. Looks like you all had lots of fun so the memories will always be great! Our parents never really die...they just find a new place in our hearts where we can visit with them any time we like. So many good memories, so many good friends, so many good family members. Blessings to you all and may you keep your mom, dad, grandmama, grandpapa, in-laws always in your hearts. My great loss is in never meeting them...especially because we would have talked DOGS for days!

Love and deepest sympathy to you all.

I graduated from CCSF in May ’07. Mrs. Dawydiak taught me ‘Trends and Issues in Nursing’, and ‘Nursing of Children’. Mrs. Dawydiak was a unique teacher, always passionate, inspirational, candid, and witty. She was the ideal teacher for topics in ethics, values and issues in Nursing. A very memorable teacher! My sincere condolences to her family.

To the Dawydiak family;

It saddens me so to know of the death of Cis. She was my dearest and oldest friend in whom I shared so many intimate parts of my life and she of hers.

I know what it is like to lose your parents so close together, but I can only guess at how you feel and deal with this loss.

Your Mom helped me get my job at City. She saw in me abilities and talents and then gave me the freedom to "fly". We shared the same philosophy about nursing and practiced with the same beliefs and vision. Together we laughed, cried, started a business, taught class together in come of the most unusual circumstances and "classrooms" but always for the good of the student. We didn't always agree, but we never had a cross word with each other. Even though she was furious with me for leaving city to upgrade my position, she finally came around and wished me the very best.

I want you all to know, with the loss of your mother a very long and important chapter in my life has come to an end. I will always miss her and my memories will always be about sharing good times and bad and always with a manhattan in our hands.

I loved her very much. My prayers are with you all

Love, Diane

Dear Dawydiak Family ... I will always remember Cis as an inspired leader, a talented teacher, and as one who always had her feet planted firmly on the ground. She was witty and wise and she will most certainly be missed at CCSF. The RN Nursing Dept. will never be the same without her there. Peace to you all.

Dear Dawydiak family,
My deepest sympathy to you at this time. I'm glad I had the opportunity to work with Sis at City College; she influenced and inspired many people with grace, dignity, knowledge, and a passion for life. Our talks about the dog world were always fun and interesting. I miss her presence.

I can only pray for her who has achieved eternal peace. Her life was just like a candle in darkness- guiding the path for hundreds of nurses for decades!

Dear Dawydiak Family,
I can't imagine the number of nurses who have been influenced by the life of Cissy. As a new nursing director, I was amazed by Cissy's positive perspective, intellect, and can do attitude. One can only hope to accomplish a small percentage of the legacy Cissy leaves behind. She will be deeply missed.

Leanna et al - Sis was my 'Mom' at work, someone with whom I could consult about school stuff, and a real friend whom I could count on for heart-to-heart talks about personal issues. Smart, energetic and compassionate, she was also just plain fun. I really loved your mother, and while I miss her, I also feel lucky to have worked with her for 21 years.

Mrs. Dawydiak taught me pediatrics at Mt. Zion School of Nursing.
She was supportive when I needed it, funny when we needed a laugh, and above all, she was a fine human being whom I've never forgotten.
She left a trail of goodness in her path.

Dear Leanna, Reno and Family:

Our sincerest condolences upon the passing of your Mother and Mother-in-law. She was a true family person in every sense of that phrase. We know how proud you were of her and her loss will be a great void in your lives. But, her spirit--like your father's-- will never
leave you. She and your dad will watch over you and your family.

San Francisco has lost one of its finest persons of the "greatest generation". Our thoughts are with you and your family.

I graduated from CCSF nursing school in December '05 - considering myself the oldest living nursing student at 49. Sis was inspirational in her tenacity, vigor and energy. She was adament that all of us go on and receive our BA....nurses don't last "on the floor" for long. I also remember Mr. Dawydiak from AP Giannini Jr. High 35 years before - San Francisco's like that...one big small town. Sis won't be resting - she'll be attending to something or someone.
