Gary, a third generation Californian, died peacefully in his sleep after a long illness. He was professionally an artist, teacher, and filmmaker. He was also passionately a dancer, lover, and musician. Gary had a varied and fascinating life. From his earliest days working for Walt Disney as an illustrator to his last career as an art director in TV and film, he was a creative soul.To plant trees in memory, please visit the Sympathy Store.

Gary Allen was a wonderful, kind, and inspiring teacher I had the privilege of learning from while at City College in the early 70s. I am sad to hear of his passing. He leaves behind a legacy of free thinking and encouragement to so many Sam Francisco art students.

Gary Allen was a wonderful Art Teacher. I was only able to take a couple of his classes, but he sure made a big impression on me. So happy to hear that he found the great love of his life and had so many happy years to share. An Emmy winner and cat lover, I'm even more impressed. RIP to my favorite Art Teacher and a wonderful Artist.

Haven't seen or communicated with him since graduation in 55 but he was a hell of a guy and we had a great time in high school I'm sure he will be missed immensely. Robert McDonnell (kansas)

My heart aches without you Gary; you are the love of my life, my soul mate and best friend. Almost 29 years together, so many wonderful things we shared. We were two peas in a pod, happy just hanging out with each other and, of course, with cats Sam then Toby. We knew from the moment we met there was magic and chemistry between us; it wasn't just a spark, it was a bonfire. We were meant to be and so we were. We "got each other" and didn't live for the approval of others; we always had each others' backs. These past few weeks I have been reflecting on the first night we met, our first date and all of the fantastic adventures, big and small, that we embarked on. My precious Gary, I would give anything to see your smile and hear your kind, gentle voice once again. Toby misses you too, yet senses your spirit and energy surrounding us with love. For now, I have the indelible memories you have left in my heart. Always and forever sweetheart, until we meet again, I love you.
Cleo & Toby xoxo
