Aug. 14, 1934 - Nov. 12, 2018
Jack F. Kirsch passed away on November 12, 2018 at home in El Cerrito, surrounded by his family. Jack was born on August 14, 1934 in Detroit, Michigan, the elder son of Louis and Laura Kirsch. He graduated from the University of Michigan in 1956 with a degree in Physics and then pursued graduate studies in biochemistry at the Rockefeller Institute in New York (including periods studying abroad at Cambridge University, England and the Carlsberg Laboratory in Copenhagen, Denmark), obtaining his Ph.D. from Rockefeller Institute in 1961. While doing postdoctoral work at Brandeis University in Boston, Jack met his wife, Birthe, and they were married in 1962. Jack and Birthe then spent a year in Israel during 1963-64, where he did postdoctoral research at the Weizmann Institute. To plant trees in memory, please visit the Sympathy Store.

As the immediate past Director of the UCB Retirement Center, I had the pleasure of working at times with Jack in his role on the UCB Emeriti Assn. Board of Directors. Always a thoughtful, considerate and inquisitive person, he worked diligently and with diplomacy on the association's luncheon programs. He was an easy and enjoyable colleague for continuing learning in retirement for the next chapter lives of Berkeley retirees.

As I reflect on the (significant) role Jack played in my life, I feel grateful that Jack accepted me into his lab. He had many great qualities, and I especially appreciated the freedom he granted to me in pursuing my research interests. His relentless pursuit of clear scientific communication was admirable, and I improved under his guidance in this area. The atmosphere of the research group was highly collaborative and friendly, and I always believed that this was due in no small part to Jack's leadership.
My thoughts are with Birthe, Joshua, Gorm, and the rest of his family.
As I realize how many Kirsch lab alumni I have lost touch with, I have created a LinkedIn group to reestablish those connections. Join here: https://www.linkedin.com/groups/13647749/

What sad news. I remember Jack with great fondness to this day. I, like many others, owe him such a debt of gratitude for what he invested in others. His legacy lives on. We exchanged letters every year at Christmas time and I will miss this.
