Jackson Schultz Obituary

Jackson Le Roy Schultz
August 31, 1925 - March 10, 2022
Jackson Le Roy Schultz passed away on March 10, 2022 at home with loved ones by his side. He was, most importantly, a beloved husband, father, grandfather, great-grandfather and friend known as Dad, Poppo, Daddy, Papa Jack, Captain Jack, Gpa and whatever pleased his family.
He is survived by his late wife Rhoda's daughters - Rhoda Lachman Regalado (Robert Regalado), Roxanna Lachman Shores (the late Daniel Shores), and Robin Lachman Lee (Thomas Lee), as well as his daughter from his first marriage Beatrice Jean Hamlin and his son from his first marriage George Clifford Schultz. He was a devoted grandfather to his ten grandchildren (JP Guilbault, Renee Guilbault, James Hamlin, Rhoda Byrne, Christina Masciel, Robert Regalado, Cameron Niswander, Thomas Lee, Dylan Lee and Ryan Lee) and to his 8 great-grandchildren (Rhoda Byrne, Conor Byrne, Rory Byrne, June Masciel, Maya Masciel, Erin Guilbault, Thomas Jackson Guilbault and Frances Meijran).
Jackson's life was rich in fulfillment and accomplishments as a well-known and respected San Francisco civic, business and social participant. To the end, he led an active life full of love and caring for his family and many friends. He was proud of his career as a Naval Officer, enlisting in 1943 and retiring in 1971 as a decorated Captain after 28 years of service. He then enjoyed another active career until 1996 with Wells Fargo Bank as Senior Vice President and Manager of Public and Government Affairs.
In 1963, Jackson married the beautiful Rhoda Welch Lachman, a well-known model in San Francisco, and they enjoyed an exceptionally full life of interesting work, lovely children, good friends, domestic and international travel, social activities and, for Jackson, sports (tennis, squash, golf, fly fishing, bird hunting and body surfing). He was involved in numerous causes and worthwhile organizations.
Jackson was born on August 31, 1925 and grew up in Beverly Hills, CA where he picked up a lifelong love of many sports and where he first learned to play the flute. In 1943 he signed up for the Navy V-12 Program, a College Officer's training program. After he graduated from Beverly Hills High School, he attended Stanford University for six months until his commencement of the Navy Program, where fate sent him first to Colorado College and then to UCLA, graduating from there in 1945 with a B.S. He was selected for the Harvard Graduate School of Business as a midshipman until the war ended in late 1945, and he began an active-duty career of 28 years which included seven years of sea duty in the Pacific.
As a young Navy Lieutenant, Jackson was sent to the American Embassy in Paris to work in the Military Assistance Program with the French Navy. When that assignment was completed, he attended Stanford Graduate School where he received his MBA. After a tour at the Great Lakes Naval Training Station outside of Chicago, he transferred to Sasebo, Japan where he was the Supply Officer on the Repair ship USS LUZON. From there he went to Washington D.C. where he became the Aide and Special Assistant to the Commander of the Naval Supply Systems Command. After that, fate led him to San Francisco where he was Supply Officer of the Hunters Point Naval Shipyard and where he met and married Rhoda in 1963. The family moved to London in 1965 where he was Supply Officer on the staff of the Commander, Naval Forces, Europe. After his London assignment concluded, he returned to San Francisco where he became Commander of the Military Ocean Terminal at the Oakland Army Base. There, all cargo destined for Vietnam and other Pacific Bases was processed and shipped. It was from there that he retired from the Navy in 1971.
In addition to numerous service medals, in 1970, Jackson was awarded the Meritorious Service Medal and the Legion of Merit by the Secretary of the Navy. A Navy Captain then, he also had the unusual distinction of being designated by the Secretary of the Army as the 1970 Army Economy Champion of the Year for innovations that saved the Army more money than any one individual in the Army had done that year. In 1999 he was awarded the Distinguished Service Award of the Navy Exchange Command for fifteen years of service as a Presidential appointee on their Advisory Board. Later, he was selected by the U. S. Navy Supply Corps as a Distinguished Alumnus for accomplishments while serving in the Navy as well as in the civilian world after retirement.
Jackson joined Wells Fargo Bank in 1971and served for 25 years as Senior Vice President and Manager of Public and Governmental Affairs. Over the following years, he and Rhoda served as the bank's unofficial Protocol Officers and became well known representatives of the bank in business circles and at civic and social events. He served on the Board of Directors of the California Bankers Association, chaired their Government Relations Division, and was active in numerous Washington D.C. trade associations, including Chairmanship of the American Bankers Association Government Relations Committee. He was Deputy Chairman of the California Business Roundtable, and served the San Francisco and California Chambers of Commerce, among numerous other associations. He was appointed by three California Governors to various commissions - Employment of the Handicapped, California Film Commission and California Economic Strategy Panel. He was also appointed a Director of Hastings College of the Law by Governor Wilson.
In later years, Jackson and Rhoda oversaw and organized all the annual international meetings of the distinguished International Advisory Council of Wells Fargo Bank. Socially, one of his favorite traditions was his involvement in the Floor Committee at the annual San Francisco Cotillion Debutante Ball, leading the debutantes in their presentations and figures. He loved to dance, and everyone loved dancing with him!
Jackson was a Director of the Cooper Development Company, the Bank of San Francisco and SOLA International Corporation, as well as Vice Chairman and Director of the Rose Institute of Claremont McKenna College. He served as Chairman of the Board of Crystal Springs School for a number of years in the formative time of the School. He was a President, Director and member of the Burlingame Country Club, a Director and member of the Pacific Union Club, and a Director and member of the Bohemian Club.
In 1988, Jack became Co-Chairman of the San Francisco Lone Sailor Memorial Committee which established the spectacular Lone Sailor Memorial at Vista Point at the north end of the Golden Gate Bridge. The Memorial was opened on April 14, 2002, and became a popular tourist attraction visited by millions of people each year due to its beautiful location and exquisite design.
Jackson was a true Renaissance man with interests in multiple hobbies and sports. He loved photography and always had his camera or video camera handy to record things for his family's history. He loved horticulture, particularly his tuberous begonias, roses and tomatoes. He was an accomplished flutist, having started playing in high school for the band. He built doll houses, and he created a detailed miniature of the family's living room. For some twenty-five years, he and his family enjoyed their beach home at Del Mar, California, where he body surfed and biked extensively. He became a skilled and devoted fly fisherman, traveling around the country to fish and, finally to New Zealand, where he and Rhoda spent six weeks every fall in their later years. They spent many of their evenings playing dominoes in New Zealand (and at home).
Jackson was devoted to his family and friends. Many lives throughout his active and memorable life were enriched by his presence, whether as a leader, co-worker, friend or acquaintance. After 53 wonderful years of marriage, he lost his beloved wife Rhoda in 2014. Now he has gone to be reunited with her. He truly had a noble spirit, and his lively sense of humor, spirited intelligence, and love of life, family and friends was inspirational. He will be sorely missed by all but his love and many contributions will live on in our memories.
His vision and passion in his work to establish the Lone Sailor Memorial, which represents a sailor's last view of the West Coast as he sails out for duty at sea, is now symbolic of Jackson's last look at life before going on to his next adventure.
Jackson's family would like to say a special "thank you" to Dr. Dale Ritzo, Dr, Peter Callander, Dr. Thomas Vail and the wonderful care provided by Mission Hospice and Home Care. The family is deeply appreciative of the many years of compassionate care and friendship of Jackson's caregivers Johnalie, Joy, Sharon and Wendy.
Memorial services will be private. In lieu of flowers, the family requests donations be made in Jackson's memory to the United Religions Initiative in San Francisco or to The Navy Supply Corps Foundation.

I had the honor of serving with Jack in London in the late 1960´s. He was an absolutely true gentleman. Although I was a LT, and Jack was a Capt. , he and his beautiful wife included my wife, Libby and I, in many of their social events. Later, I was Chairman of the Supply Corps Foundation when Jack was selected as a Distinguished Alumni. I ALWAYS valued his wise counsel. He will be missed by all who came in contact with him. Far winds and a following sea to one of the very.best. Dob Hickman, RADM,SC, USN (ret)

I first met Jack when he was in London and I was a LTJG and Special Asst. to the Director of Supply Corps Personnel in Washington DC. He really wanted to return to the Bay Area and we were able to send him to Oakland. Over the years we stayed in touch and saw each other at Navy events in San Diego and San Francisco. He and I worked together closely when I was on the Board and later Chairman of the Navy SC Foundation. He was a good friend, mentor and super American. God rest your soul, Jack. You are missed.
