NATASHA EILAND Obituary

Natasha Eiland Our dear Natasha Eiland passed away on July 19th after a long battle with breast cancer. Born Darlene Lugar in Gary, Indiana in 1941 and educated at Purdue, she settled in Seattle where, among her many other endeavors, she was the founding board member and an important champion of what became the Pacific Northwest Ballet company of Seattle. Later she settled in San Francisco where she established an antique shop and where new friends began calling her Natasha. In 1978, she joined husband Emmett Eiland in running a Berkeley Oriental rug business. In 2005 she co-authored a published novel, "The Last Resort." Natasha is succeeded by her husband, Emmett Eiland, her children, Joshua Green IV, her daughter Jennie Carter, and five grandchildren: Joshua V, Christina, Jonathan, Lindsay, and Tyler, all living in the Seattle area. Natasha was a beautiful, vivacious, friendly, intelligent, and special friend, mother, grandmother, and wife. For seventy years, she brought cheer, joy and fun to all. We will miss her.

Dear Emmett and family, Our hearts are saddened. Natasha was so fun, so smart, so wonderful. She was a valiant warrior during her struggle with cancer. We will miss her always.

Natasha Eiland will always be remembered by me for the keenness of her perception that fine tribal textiles need be understood as true Art with a capital A and not just ethnography. To that end, she created to my knowledge the first gallery in the Bay Area devoted exclusively to showing of such pieces, separate from the family rug business, circa 1979-80. As a very green young dealer, I was extremely proud that she selected some of my Bolivian and Indonesian weavings to put on view. For this small but personally significant reason, I salute Natasha and I mourn her loss. My condolences to the Eiland Family!
