Robert Vance Obituary

Robert Lee Vance Jr. Mar. 27, 1931 - Mar. 1, 2012 Robert L. Vance Jr., passed away peacefully on March 1st 2012 in Walnut Creek, California. Bob is survived by his three children, Charles Vance of Napa California, Lee Vance Walter of Alexandria Virginia and Robert Vance III, of Lafayette California; his daughters-in law Farrell and Julie, and his 8 grandchildren: Ryan, Donnie, Nathan, Vance, Nora, Matt, Calvin and Brody, all of whom cherished the years shared with Grandpa Bob. Bob's wife Joanne Meyer Vance passed away in 2005; Bob's only sister, Mary McEneany, formerly of Moraga, CA, passed away just a few days prior on February 26, and his beloved parents, Robert Lee Vance, and Alberta Rothaermel Vance of Berkeley are deceased. Bob grew up in Southern California, attended Hoover High School and graduated from U.C Berkeley with a degree in Civil Engineering in 1954. He was a member of the Chi Psi Fraternity. He remained an avid Cal Football fan and booster, holding season tickets (Section EE), top row in Memorial Stadium, enabling a bird's eye view of the bay as well as the Bears. He raised his family in Lafayette, and lived for 10 years in San Ramon, CA. He enjoyed spending time in South Lake Tahoe throughout his life. Bob worked for the California Department of Transportation (Cal Trans) as a project manager early in his civil engineering career, prior to joining C.K Moseman Construction Co. as resident engineer and project manager. He founded RLV Engineering in the 1990s. Bob worked on highway and bridge projects throughout the Bay Area, Los Angeles and Honolulu. He rejoined Cal Trans later in his career as a mediator, and was an advisor on a variety of highway projects until 2004. He was a parishioner at St. Joan of Arc Catholic Church in San Ramon, a Board member of Canyon Lakes homeowners association, the Al Tahoe Forest Homeowners Association, and a member of the Associated General Contractors of America. He will be remembered by all who knew him as a mentor and excellent provider, with a contagious sense of humor and passionately devoted to his faith and family. Donations can be made in his memory to the Alzheimer's Association at www.alz.org to support research in brain injury and dementia.

Following are a few memories, primarily of Bob's youthful days: the hospitality of Bob's parents, a trait passed on to Bob, who was extremely generous with his time and resources. Summers at Tahoe, both on the beach and in the Wagon Wheel or Harrah's. Jack, Doc, and Reggie at the Varsity Lounge and at Golden Gate Fields where Ismael Valenzuela was a favorite. Many, many Chi Psi parties and football games, including some Rose Bowl trips. Bob was indeed a man of faith and also a lot of fun. I cherish the memories.
