Dixie Self Obituary

A proud graduate of North Central High School. Dixie married Vaughn Gaschet del'Isle in 1964, embracing the life of a military wife during the Vietnam War era. Dixie & Vaughn settled in Kalispell, Montana, where they raised their three daughters, Maria, Joni, and Sandra.

While her daughters were young, Dixie was active at Bethlehem Lutheran Church, babysat children to provide extra income, and served as a Camp Fire Girls leader. Due to her natural beauty, found great success selling Jafra cosmetics.

After her divorce in 1984, Dixie moved to California. In 1992, she married her soulmate, Ai Self. Together they shared a wonderful life filled with faith, love, & laughter.

A gifted seamstress and quilter, Dixie expressed her love through beautifully handcrafted quilts for family, friends, and with donations to senior centers, hospitals, and animal shelters. A lifelong animal lover, Dixie treated every beloved pet as part of the family.

Dixie is survived by her devoted husband Ai; daughters Maria Dobbs (Bart), Joni Foster (Wil), and Sandra Hendricks (Greg); grandchildren Tyler, Nick, and Cody Dobbs; Jamil and Jordyn Foster; Anabella Hernandez; Ashley and Amy Hendricks; numerous great-grandchildren; and niece and nephews Julie Bohman (Ron), Mark Houk (Inez), and Dan Houk (Lori).

A celebration of Dixie's life will be held Saturday, January 10, at 10 a.m. at Whitworth Church, 312 W. Hawthorne Rd., Spokane.

Guests are invited to wear yellow and/or red in joyful remembrance of Dixie's vibrant spirit and favorite colors.

Dixie was a dear friend at North Central High School. We were both in Red Feathers which was lots of fun. She was so pleased when I came to know the Lord in Spring of 1964. She was the epitome of kindness and sweetness. Mark Twain defined kindness as the language the deaf can hear and the blind can see. Dixie reflected that type of kindness. Thank you, Lord, for my friend Dixie.

It was not until I became a mother myself that I fully understood what a gift my mom was. Motherhood gave me the clarity to see her patience, her sacrifices, and the depth of her love in a way I couldn´t see before. What once felt ordinary revealed itself as extraordinary.
Dixie was perfect in her imperfections. It was her grounded, redeeming qualities that made her truly beautiful. While she was physically stunning, a fact that was recognized long before she ever did, her real beauty shone through in the way she lived her life: with kindness, humility, and a generous heart.
Not everyone immediately liked her, although most did. The people that didn´t, she would eventually win them over. She would find some way to make a connection. No matter who it was, she made it a point to ensure that others felt important, like they were seen. Her ability to make people feel acknowledged was one of her greatest gifts. Probably because she knew better than anyone how much it mattered.
I used to love to make her laugh; to really get her going. Sometimes when she would laugh really hard, tears would come streaming down her face and it would seem like she stopped breathing, only take in a huge breath, and tell me gasping, "you are horrible Sandra!".
Dixie was not only a good mother, but also a very good friend. I am fortunate to know her true self. Her dreams, her vulnerabilies.
Many of the best parts of who I am exist because of her love and influence. She strengthened my relationship with the Lord, and it brings me comfort knowing she is with Him now.
She never passed up a chance to enjoy the moment. She showed me that animals, like people, can usually be won over with kindness... and a few treats.
She didn´t cry often, but when she did, you knew it truly mattered. She was spunky in her older age. She loved to exaggerate stories. When speaking of me she always painted me in the best possible light. I spent my life trying to be the person she told everyone I was.
I miss her deeply. I will always have tremendous love for her.
