Cynthia Leigh Obituary

Cynthia Fuller Leigh always thought that she led a charmed life. That ended on the morning of September 14, 2024 following metastatic breast cancer in the lungs. She was born in Monroe, Louisiana on October 30, 1945 to Cynthia and Ned Leigh. She played the piano by ear from age 2 and took 12 years of classical musical training but mostly enjoyed playing contemporary music. She was a Salutatorian at Neville High School in Monroe in 1963, Magna Cum Laude and Mortar Board at Louisiana State University in Baton Rouge in 1967, and Order of the Coif at The University of Texas School of Law in Austin in 1984. Early in her career, she was a teacher at the alternative Greenbriar School near Bastrop, Texas, and later the Office Manager at Legal Aid of Central Texas in Austin. Following law school, she worked as an Assistant Attorney General in the Environmental Division of Attorney General Jim Mattox in 1985; but she found her real calling when Barbara Hines asked her to join her immigration and naturalization law practice in 1988. She enjoyed representing thousands of worthy immigrants become a part of the American dream and always considered herself fortunate to have found been invited into that branch of the law in which to make her career. She learned almost everything she knew of that practice from Barbara Hines and passed on her knowledge to her associates Iliana Holguin, Jackie Watson, and Kate Lincoln-Goldfinch. She was named a Board Certified Attorney in Immigration and Nationality Law by the Texas Board of Legal Specialization. She met Ishmael Herrera Soto in November 1984 and went on a happy whirlwind life from then until his untimely death in February 2017. She loved her stepchildren Martha J. Soto, Ishmael H. Soto II, Pablo R. Soto, and welcomed her daughter Cynthia Leigh Soto in June 1990. That mother-daughter relationship made her entire life very rewarding. She loved all her friends and valued and appreciated her extensive family for everything they did for her throughout her life. She leaves behind her children and grandchildren, and nieces and nephews. She particularly thanks her doctors and nurses throughout her last journey, especially Dr. Naheed Velji and his staff at Baylor Scott and White in Austin.

Cynthia Leigh was one of my favorite childhood friends. We lived in the same neighborhood growing up, attended all the same schools, and both of us even graduated from LSU, although she continued to graduate school. She was delightful to be around, always in a good mood, smartest in our class, and always of high moral character! After that we lost touch for a while, but I'm so happy we connected again in the last year of her life. She came back to Monroe, LA for our 60th Neville High School reunion. Cynthia was so happy she got to come home for one more time and she enjoyed all the festivities ! We were a very close class and felt so blessed to have lived during this era. We kept in touch this past year and, of course, she endured her illness with grace. I feel blessed to have had her as a part of my life! Gay Hargrove Morris

Cynthia Leigh was an outstanding person and lawyer. She was always welcoming and kind to me, and she was always generous with sharing her knowledge and expertise in immigration law. I knew that perhaps her daughter, who I never met, may have had some special needs, and that the family lived out in the country, and perhaps owned a horse. Cynthia was always a positive person and was forever on the side of people in need of help.
My condolences to her family, and to Barbara Hines, Jackie Watson, and Kate Lincoln-Goldfinch, who I knew all worked with Cynthia and I am sure were close to her, and to Virginia Raymond and the many others in the Austin immigration law community whose lives were touched by Cynthia.

Cynthia will be forever in my heart. She had baby Leigh about the time I had my daughter. Two months apart these two girls are very close and still are, like sisters. We discovered that Leigh had a hearing loss. Cynthia, diligent about righting this condition, took Leigh to get cochlear ear implants. Cynthia trained Leigh to be a paralegal and worked along side her Mom. This strong, energetic and generous woman will be dearly missed. She was the glue to our family. Finally at rest from the pain she endured. I'm sad that she is gone, the memories will live on.

I was shocked to learn of Cynthia's passing and can only imagine her battle with cancer. Cynthia was one of the most practical attorneys I worked with over many years. She had a unique ability to listen to a set of facts, ask probing questions and then give me her thoughts on how to consider approaching the situation. She was one of the most ethical attorneys I have known. I enjoyed sharing experiences with her re horses and other animals. And she was great fun to be around at conferences. A real loss for the immigration bar and the Austin community.

I am so sorry to learn of Cynthia's passing. I was fortunate to know Cynthia in the early years of my law practice, and consulted with her many times when there were immigration aspects to a client's case. She was unfailingly knowledgeable, helpful, and an absolute pleasure to work with.
I remember in particular a mutual client who had a complicated situation which was ultimately successfully resolved after a lengthy hearing in Judge Wisser's court. That's a happy memory to this day.
My condolences to Cynthia's family on the loss of this wonderful lady.
