Family-Placed Obituary
Elizabeth Hendon Stokes Elizabeth Hendon Stokes, of Austin, died Saturday, December 11, 2004, surrounded by her family. She was born June 5, 1922, to Walter and Gertrude Hendon in Richland, Texas. She met her future husband, Bill, at Richland High School. They were married on May 1, 1942, and were blessed to celebrate their 62nd wedding anniversary this year. She is survived by her husband; son William Glenn Stokes III and his wife Brenda of Austin; daughter Lynne and her husband, Dan Moulton of Addison. She is also survived by her grandchildren Darcie Stokes and Laurel and Claire Moulton. Beth received Bachelor and Masters degrees in Social Work from Sam Houston State University, and the Ed.D. degree in Psychology from North Texas State University, in 1959. In 1942, she was employed as a field worker with the Texas Department of Public Welfare. During World War II, she followed Bill to Mississippi and Alabama for his military assignments. After the war she taught in the public schools of Texas before taking a position in 1955, as a School Psychologist and Director of Guidance for the Clarksville, Tennessee Public Schools. In 1960, she joined the Austin Peay State University faculty, where she served until her retirement in 1985, as Professor of Psychology. Beth served as President of the Tennessee Association of School Psychologists, the Tennessee Association for Counselor Education, and the Tennessee Personnel and Guidance Association. She received the Distinguished Teacher Award from Austin Peay State University in 1976. Upon their retirement, Beth and Bill moved to Austin, Texas. Beth was an active volunteer all her life. She founded and worked for 25 years with the Saturday Recreation program of ARC in Clarksville, and recently with Marbridge, the Regency Village Care Center, and as a driver for the American Cancer Society. She was the first recipient of the Community Distinguished Service Award from the Clarksville Area Chamber of Commerce in 1986. Beth was an avid reader, bridge player, bargain shopper, and world traveler. She loved her many friends and family passionately, and they loved her. The family expresses sincere gratitude to Dr. Dennis Tweedy and the staff of the Southwest Regional Cancer Center, and to Dr.'s Jorge Romaguera, Fredrick Hagemeister, and Bernard Levin of the M.D. Anderson Cancer Center for their caring attention. In lieu of flowers the family requests that memorial contributions be made to the Hendon Stokes Scholarship Fund, Austin Peay State University Clarksville, TN., 37040, to the William and Elizabeth Stokes Scholarship Fund, Navarro College Foundation, Corsicana, TX., 75110, or to the American Cancer Society. Visitation will be 6:00 p.m. to 8:00 p.m., Tuesday, December 14, 2004, at Cook-Walden Forest Oaks Funeral Home. Funeral services will be at 10:30 a.m., Wednesday, December 15, 2004, at Shepherd of the Hills Presbyterian Church, 5226 West William Cannon, with Reverend Larry Coulter officiating. Interment will be 11:00 a.m., Thursday, December 16, 2004, at Richland Cemetery in Richland, Tex.
