I just saw Lee Roy last week. He was outside by the Library on Exposition Blvd. I saw him almost every morning at Randalls on Lake Austin Blvd and he also helped me with my cars at the Chevron in Tarrytown. He was a sweet man and will be dearly, and longingly missed!

Lee Roy was indeed an icon in Tarrytown. He knew every customer by name at the Gulf station on the corner. He was a mentor to my brother, whom he called "little Doc", when he worked at the Gulf station as a teen. He even helped me get my dad's truck started when I snuck it out before I had a license...that was more than 30 years ago, and it seems like yesterday. I'm sure he never told my parents. And although I moved away from Austin 26 years ago, Lee Roy always remembered me by name every time I saw him.
To Lee Roy's family, you are all in my thoughts and prayers. He will be missed!

It was just a few weeks ago when I last saw Lee Roy while driving by the Texaco station with my Mom so she could see her old house. The simple sight of him brought back fond memories of my childhood.

I was lucky enough to take my bike to the Gulf station as a boy and talk to Lee Roy, he always smiled and made me happy.

I am glad that he touched my life and wish my own kids could have known him.

When I was a starving student at U.T. 30 years ago, my brakes gave out going down Redbud Lane. I'll never forget his kindness when he simply re-attached the power assist, smiled and said "No charge". He was honest and loved people. What a wonderful heritage to leave us all!

I've known Lee Roy for many years and to know Lee Roy is to know a man who did things his way. A man who treated everyone the same. In all the years I've known Lee Roy I can't remember him ever getting angry. He was always laughing or joking with guys that he worked with sometimes even laughing at the guys he worked with. That was Lee Roy never taking things to seriously. Always with a grain of salt. Hey Lee Roy between you and I know your in a better place "singing down by the river".

As I drove past the station, feeling the weight of the world, I heard Lee Roy holler, waving, "Hello there, my friend". More than once or twice, he made me glad to be alive when I was wondering about if i should be.

The courtesy and care she care showed my widowed mother made a deep impression as well.

I'd love to be more like Lee Roy.

Paul, your father's story documents what an exceptional and well-loved man he was! You have so much to be proud of to have had such a wonderful father. I was so very sorry to hear about his accident and the injuries which resulted in your loss of him on this earth. My thoughts and prayers are with you and your family at this time. God bless you all.

I worked with Lee Roy at the Broadus Chevron while in high school at Austin High. He was one of the most genuine and hilarious characters anyone could ever meet. He will be missed and Tarrytown will not be the same without him.

LeeRoy was a hero to me long before i learned about his military service during WWII. i was 8 years old when my father died, penniless and without a church that would that would give my father a service. My father was a gambler and sinner so the church was out. LeeRoy gave up his home and living room on Canterbury St to hold my father's wake and LeeRoy provided a clean suit for my father to wear. LeeRoy also reassured me that my father was in heaven, no matter what anyone said. To an 8 year old, this meant a lot. i am in my late 50's now but i have never forgotten his generosity and love he showed and gave me. I will miss seeing LeeRoy at our favorite resturant for breakfast on Sundays, but i will never forget you Uncle LeeRoy

My family started trading with the "Gulf" station in the late 1940's.

Lee Roy was the personification of friendly service and a kind word. He helped me air up my bicycle tires and later did the same for my children.

He will be missed. He was part of the neighborhood and I was always glad to see him, both as a child and as an adult with grown children of my own.

As a child growing up in Tarrytown, one of my first memories of going in the car was going up to Broaddus Gulf and Leroy would always be there with a smile to help us with our car. Tarrytown was blessed with his caring and professional presence for many years. He was a really good man. Just 2 weeks ago, I had a problem with the hub cap on one my tires and couldn't get air in it, and he was able to assist me with it and I was able to go on to work. He was never too busy to take the time to help someone. My greatest sympathy goes out to the Leroy's family. He will be missed very much. Tarrytown won't be the same without him.

Lee Roy,
You will be remembered by many for being a friend and counselor to all who wandered in to Tarrytown Broaddus Gulf/Chevron and Tarrytown Texaco with car issues. I might not have graduated from Austin High and UT without your common sense advice. When I ruined my older brother's VW Beetle in 1970, you encouraged me to ALWAYS check the oil and sent me to C.B. Smith Volkswagen replace the engine. That saved me from the wrath of my brother before he went to Viet Nam. You may have saved my life when you stopped me from over-inflating a radial tire. It looked low but your tire gage showed 70 lbs! It didn't explode and, 30+ years later, I have a wonderful wife and 4 children! As countless others, I will always fondly remember you!

Like so many others Tarrytown kids who grew up in the 50s, I met LeeRoy before I could even drive. His sense of humor and attention to his job made the Gulf station visit fun. I haven't seen him in many years but I will remember him as someone who touched my life so many years ago.

Uncle Leroy, we all have beautiful memories of you. One of the main ones was when I stayed with you and aunt Ardy fresh out of high school. I had been stopped by a policeman as I was crossing 1st street. I went home and I told him not to laugh about what I was about to tell him. After the officer told me he had stopped me because my license plate was falling I asked the officer if he would like to see my TDL which I had just gotten. I searched my purse and couldn't find it so I asked him if he would follow me back so I could show it to him. He said, of course that he couldn't and gave me a ticket. I was crying and Uncle Leroy just couldn't stop laughing at me and always made fun of me for doing such a foolish thing. I love you Uncle Leroy for your widdyness and the love you gave us all as we were growing up!!!

Thanks for the Memories!

We used to recall HALLOWEEN in Tarry Town in the 1950's. A very colorful event the
"questionable" behavior was very benign by
today's standards. In Austin's history Lee Roy ranks with the best.

The contemporary focus on keeping Austin Weird does little to honor a guy like Lee Roy Hernandez. Truely a good person. Who but such a man could have humored, mentored and loved the generations of teenaged boys who patronized or just hung out at those gas stations over the years. I still remember his good spirt after more than 50 years away from Austin. My condolances to his family and his employers.

Mr. Hernandez was a wonderful, friendly person. We enjoyed getting to know him over the years. Our son, Grant, loved visiting the gas station because Mr. Hernandez would let him "fill up" the tires. For a little four year old boy, this was grand. He was a good man and we will miss him dearly.

I met Mr. H when I was in high school in the mid 1970's and spent summers in Austin at a friend's house on Exposition, a block away from the Chevron station. I later moved here in the late 1980's and rekindled our friendship. That's 34 years, all told. A great guy, a tragic end to his life. Tons of people of all ages no doubt feel the same. You're loved, Lee Roy. You always were, and you knew it.
