Jake, I wanted to tell you how proud you would be right now of Zen-Jitsu. Team ZJ has 3 fighters heading to Atlanta tonight to fight this friday in your honor. As you always said win or lose, just putting yourself out there is a huge accomplishment. Please be there with them and keep them safe. You will be loved and missed always! Your, Sange

Sandra, It has taken me this long to try to articulate my words of sorrow. I still can't believe the news of Jakes' passing. When Jake worked at Flagler Construction he used to come by our sandwich shop (Shane's) to get lunch. His smile always lit up the place. He brought with him such positive energy. We were so happy to hear what was going on in his life. He shared with us the news of your marriage and then the news of Von. He enjoyed sharing his pictures with us. He just lit up when he spoke of you and Von. We know there are no words to express our sorrow, but we would like you to know you and Von are in our prayers. We pray God will give you the strength and the faith you need to carry you through. May you feel his presence and be comforted. God bless.

Sandra, deepest regrets. I just heard today of Jake's passing. I had been leaving him messages because we were all suppose to go out again while I was on vacation in St. Augustine. That was the last discussion we had on Friday, 6/5. I left you and Von a message at home, if I can do anything, just let me know.

Justin and I were good friends thru elementary and middle school. As children, we skateboarded, surfed, played paddle tennis, and explored most of St Augustine. Justin was always inventing or modifying something. He taught me how to play paddle tennis so we could enter the upcoming doubles tournanment. I didn't have a paddle so he took on of his parents old ones and modified it with more air holes and a new grip. We came in second. One summer he built an underwater breathing device out of a bicycle air pump, hose, duct tape and a snorkel. He then talked me into buying a divers knife at a flea market, he already had one, so we could protect ourselves from alligators, LOL. We snuck into Cooksey's campground, which had a large pond, and tried out his invention. It Worked!! We took turns pumping while the other explored the pond. He had two cats, Kibbs and Whitening, who were test pilots for many of our inventions. They survived all of them, he loved those cats.
I ran into Justin a few times over the years and we always laughed about our childhood. I'm happy I was able to share that time with him.

Dear Family Members,
I met Jake in class at the University of Florida and like so many people quickly and easily became his friend. He invited me to join Kappa Alpha and became my big brother. We had many great times cheering for the Gators in the Swamp, lifting weights at the Rec Center, going out in Gainesville, tubing the Itchetucknee River, or just hanging out in his room. Where ever we went someone knew Jake and went out of their way to say “hi.” He greeted everyone with his infectious smile and a handshake (or often a hug). He had a larger than life personality to match his frame and stature.
I looked up to and admired Jake from the moment I met him. He was kind, outgoing, loyal, and a true friend. When I sick and hospitalized with Ulcerative Colitis, Jake showed genuine concern.
I truly regret losing touch with Jake. I will always remember him and the impact he had on my life. I am glad he was able to open his gym; I know that was a dream of his. Words cannot express my shock when I read the tragic news. I have a son the same age as Von and know that Jake was a great father no matter how brief.
I will never forget the bear hug Jake gave me the last time I saw him.
Love,
Tom (“Dunny” as Jake called me) Dunmire

When I think of Jake, I will always have the fondest memories that spread a smile across my face, a mile wide, and then some. I had the pleasure of knowing Jake all through high school and also being roomates with him in Gainesville at UF. He was one of the funniest people I've ever known and as a roomate he always made me feel safe. Not only did he make us laugh to no end, but he made me, Tina Lewis (of SAHS), Angela & Odilie feel so safe and protected in G-ville. He was a charistmatic person, giving, loving, protecting and lived life to the fullest. I always admired him, his spirit and passion for life. Anyone who knew him, loved him for the remarkable person he was. When I think of him, I remember so many fun times and silly things he would do to make me & everyone laugh. He is, and will continue to be greatly missed. I saw him last around Christmas and he proudly told me about his lovely wife and precious son. He was always smiling, full of life and I will take those thoughts and memories with me always. Life here will be missing something extremely special without him. But I have to believe that we will all meet again someday. And in the meantime he'll be smiling and shining brightly down upon all who he loved and adored. One thing is for certain, when I think of him, his wit, charisma, handsome charm and humor, it can't help but make me smile. Thank you Jake for enriching so many years of my life, and to his beloved family my thoughts and prayers are with you always.
With Deepest Sympathy, Carrie Anglin Gajeski

Dear Family and Friends,
Justin has departed from us and now has his beautiful wings. I'm sure that he is flying high and is a mighty angel in the Lord's Kingdom. One day, we'll all meet again and rejoice in the name of the Father, the Son, and the Holy Spirit. Justin will continue to deliver his love and joy, just from the beautiful Heaven above.
I'm very blessed to have known him for many years and thankful that we share memories from SAHS. In our time of need, he was there to help our family through a very hard time. To my dearest family, some things I'd like to say...
but first of all, to let you know, that I arrived okay.
I'm writing this from heaven. Here I dwell with God above.
Here, there's no more tears of sadness; here is just eternal love.
Please do not be unhappy just because I'm out of sight.
Remember that I'm with you every morning, noon and night.
That day I had to leave you when my life on earth was through,
God picked me up and hugged me and He said, "I welcome you."
It's good to have you back again; you were missed while you were gone.
As for your dearest family, they'll be here later on.
I need you here badly; you're part of my plan.
There's so much that we have to do, to help our mortal man.
God gave me a list of things, that he wished for me to do.
And foremost on the list, was to watch and care for you.
And when you lie in bed at night, the day's chores put to flight.
God and I are closest to you....in the middle of the night.
When you think of my life on earth, and all those loving years
because you are only human, they are bound to bring you tears.
But do not be afraid to cry; it does relieve the pain.
Remember there would be no flowers, unless there was some rain.
I wish that I could tell you all that God has planned.
But if I were to tell you, you wouldn't understand.
But one thing is for certain, though my life on earth is o'er.
I'm closer to you now, than I ever was before.
There are many rocky roads ahead of you and many hills to climb;
but together we can do it by taking one day at a time.
It was always my philosophy and I'd like it for you too...
that as you give unto the world, the world will give to you.
If you can help somebody who's in sorrow and pain,
then you can say to God at night......"My day was not in vain."
And now I am contented....that my life has been worthwhile,
knowing as I passed along the way, I made somebody smile.
So if you meet somebody who is sad and feeling low,
just lend a hand to pick him up, as on your way you go.
When you're walking down the street, and you've got me on your mind;
I'm walking in your footsteps only half a step behind.
And when it's time for you to go.... from that body to be free,
remember you're not going.....you're coming here to me.
