Dr. Miguel A. Mas

Dr. Miguel A. Mas, Sr. passed away Feb. 27, 2018, at 89, at the Moultrie Creek Nursing & Rehab Center where he resided for the past year. He was born in Banes, Cuba. From a young age, he attended the Jesuit boarding school, Dolores, in Santiago de Cuba. He earned his medical degree at the University of Havana in 1957 and returned to Banes, where he married his beloved wife of 45 years Marisa and distinguished himself in the practice of Internal Medicine. They emigrated to the United States in 1966 with their six children. In 1972, he completed additional specialty training in Anesthesiology at the University of Indiana. Two years later, he accepted the position of Medical Director of the Department of Anesthesiology at St. Augustine General Hospital where he worked until a devastating stroke forced him to retire in 1992.
Throughout his life, and particularly following his stroke, his courage and dignity served as a positive example for his family and friends. Despite many hardships and adversities, he was never bitter or cynical. To the end he maintained an optimistic view of life. He loved good humor. He was an accomplished physician and had many interests, including photography, history, music and of course, the weather.
He was preceded in death by his parents, Dr. Miguel A. and Julia Mas, his wife Marisa, son Julio and grandson Daniel. He will be deeply missed by his children Lili (Bob), Madeleine (David), Maria (Lydia), Miguel (Libby), Juan (Melanie), daughter-in-law Michelle, grandchildren Lauren, Sarah, Emily, Gabriella, Stephanie, Madeleine, Bobby, Michael, Kelly, Catherine and Julie and great grandchild, Summer. He is also survived by his brother, Dr. Julio A. Mas and many more family members and friends.
His greatest joy was time spent with his family, and he never let them forget that. He was always generous with his love and his time. In the end he was ready for eternal rest and his family knows that he is at peace.
A funeral Mass will be held at St. Anastasia Catholic Church at 10 a.m. on Saturday, March 10, with Rev. Fr. Tom Willis, celebrant.
