Thomas Thrift Obituary

Thomas Hudson Thrift, 80, died Tuesday, Jan. 8, 2019, at Bailey Family Center for Caring-Community Hospice with his family by his side.

Tom was born on Dec. 20, 1938, in Jacksonville to Henry Thrift and Nellie (Sweat) Thrift. He graduated from Ketterlinus High School in St. Augustine and later received his B.S. degree from Cameron College in Lawton, Oklahoma, while serving in the Army. He was a Vietnam veteran and served honorably protecting our country for 22 years, and retired as a Major. During his military service he served with the 101st and 82nd Airborne, Special Forces, and was a Green Beret.

He really enjoyed outdoor activities. He loved to golf (2 holes-in-one), fish, fly radio control airplanes, ride his motorcycle through the countryside, and he wouldn't pass up a good game of poker.

Tom married his high school sweetheart, Mary Coxe, and was married for 61 wonderful years. He is survived by his wife; his children, Tom Thrift Jr., David Thrift, William Thrift and Sheri Thrift Roberson; sister Velma Whitehead; brother Michael Thrift; six grandsons; and one great-grandson. He was preceded in death by his parents, brother Larry Otis and sister Zelma Goss.

An immediate family memorial was held as we shared our many wonderful memories around a beautiful campfire.

Craig Funeral Home Crematory Memorial Park (www.craigfuneralhome.com) is in charge of the arrangements.
