I remember John Virgo as a kind and soft spoken human being which belied his immense knowledge of economics and consummate professionalism. His overall vision of bringing together scholars with varied perspectives from different parts of the world is exemplified in today´s IAES. We miss and remember him on the anniversary of his passing.

Dear Kathy,

It is my prayer that God will hold you in His loving arms as He has promised. He will carry you through this time of separation from your loving husband. May you receive God's comfort and peace as you lean on Him. Every tear you shed, God holds them: "You keep track of all my sorrows. You have collected all my tears in your bottle. You have recorded each one in your book." - Psalm 56:8. I am praying for you.

Dear Kathy and all of John's family,

It is with much sadness I have with the news of John's passing. He was an extraordinary man, professional, and mentor. I have always thought the world of John and feel a tremendous loss. He did more than I could have ever thanked him for in helping me with my career. He was very, very special to me and I will greatly miss him, as will all who knew and were touched by him.

Dear Kathy,
Nancy and I were very saddened to hear that our friend and colleague had passed. The characteristics that I most admired in John was his ability to remain focused when working projects. He wanted results and everyone knew it. The Research Group he organized at SIUE was a good example. We had a fine time at our monthly meetings at a local restaurant, but in the final anaylsis it was all about results. Jack K and I were so pleased to be able to work with you & John over the years. Memories of these activities will always be remembered. In time it will be with a smile again. John and you were stars in the academic community and your accomplishments will be most difficult to duplicate. John Virgo was the happy warrior of acheivement and he will be missed. Kathy, we are sure that you will continue the traditions in your present research.
We were so grateful to have chatted with both of you last month. Our thoughts and prayers are with you and your family.

Kathy,
I am extremely sorry to hear the shocking news about the premature loss of our beloved John. Nora joins me in expressing our deepest condolences to you and all Virgo family members. He was a GENUINE gentleman and a very supporting co-author. He has always been a loyal friend even after moving to Atlanta. He insisted that Nora and I stop by for dinner with both of you whenever we visit our son in Athens, Georgia. Unfortunately, we could not accommodate his gentle request – now, I truly regret this lapse. May the cherished memories you have accumulated over the years console and comfort you now and forever.

Dear Kathy, wishing you much love, comfort and support. I value John's memory and the chance to have learned about your lives together. I'll be thinking about you both.

December 1, 2012

On behalf of the International Atlantic Economic Society and personally, I want to express my deep condolences. It is so sad to learn about John's premature passing away. He would have done so much good to the community of economists all over the world. John was not only the founder of our society, he was its soul and heart, instilling the spirit of international friendship and mutual understanding into all of us who had the privilege to meet him at the conferences and, above all, in a more personal context. I will remember him as a kind and open personality who was always working hard to make the IAES an internationally highly esteemed forum for the exchange of ideas. He was not just a colleague to me; I feel to have lost a personal friend. As everybody who has met him, I feel privileged to have worked with John and had got him known personally.

Kathy, our thoughts are with you and your family at this difficult time of loss. Knowing that your husband meant a lot to you, we wish you and your family a lot of strength to overcome this hard time. Please pass our deepest sympathies on to your and John's family.

My deepest sympathies,
Reinhard Neck, Klagenfurt, Austria
