Kathryn Pierce Obituary

Kathryn Mitchell Pierce, PhD, of Clayton, Missouri, passed away on December 10, 2025 at the age of 70. Born on June 14, 1955, in Chicago, IL to William J. and Lois Knight Mitchell, Kathryn spent her childhood in and around Lowell, IN before relocating to the St. Louis area following her graduation from college. She graduated from Stephens College in 1978 and The University of Missouri – Columbia in 1982 before ultimately earning her PhD in reading and language education from Indiana University Bloomington in 1986. Kathryn was a warm and supportive family member, a gracious host, and a true friend. She was also a passionate and dedicated teacher, professor, administrator, author and researcher.

Kathryn's career spanned 47 years including 22 years in the School District of Clayton where she piloted a multi-age classroom for grades 1-3. For the past 10 years, Kathryn inspired education students at Saint Louis University, where she was awarded tenure in the School of Education in 2022. She published 6 books with her esteemed colleagues and friends in addition to authoring dozens of articles, book chapters, workshops and presentations. As a respected and influential voice in education, she devoted years of service through leadership roles in the National Council of Teachers of English (NCTE), including Languages and Literacies for All (LLA). She was also an active member of the Center for Expansion of Language and Thinking (CELT). Kathryn presented her research annually for several decades at conferences held by NCTE and the Literacy Research Association (LRA). She also organized countless workshops for local teachers. Those workshops embodied her respect for teacher knowledge, teacher expertise, and teachers' hunger for professional growth.

In the final stage of her career, Kathryn brought transformational energy and vision as the leader of the program redesign at the Saint Louis University School of Education. She also served as a board member for Premier Charter School in St. Louis. Her professional legacy will be felt for years to come. Her most treasured role, however, was that of mother to her 2 daughters and grandmother to her 5 grandchildren, which she performed with all the love in the world.

Kathryn is survived by her mother, Lois K. Mitchell of Lowell, IN; daughters Jennifer O'Neal (Andrew) of Clayton, MO and Courtney Logue (Kyber) of Santa Barbara, CA; brothers James E. (Karla) Mitchell of Crown Point, IN. and Tobin J. (Sharon) Mitchell of Carterville, IL; grandchildren, Kaitlyn, Anna and Henry O'Neal, and Tere and Vaitiare Logue; and her nieces, nephews and their children.

A celebration of her life will be held at the Church of St. Michael and St. George in Clayton on January 10, 2026 at 11 a.m. In lieu of flowers, please consider a donation to the Foundation for Women's Cancer, Lowell Public Library, the Clayton Education Foundation, a fund in her name at Premier Charter School, or your favorite school or library.

I am saddened by her passing. She was my professor at UMSL from 1989 to 1991. She was very inspirational to me. She had published a book called "Talking About Books." I bought a copy and had her sign it. Inside the cover, she wrote that someday I would be Dr. ----. When I read it, was taken aback by it. I never thought I would get a doctoral degree, let alone a master's. Yet, I did graduate Summa Cum Laude from UMSL. Her words of motivation always stayed with me. She was the first scholar to encourage me this way. I did reach out to her a few years ago and told her how much those words meant to me. And yes, I am indeed, Hannah Kivalahula-Uddin, Ph.D. She was one of my four encouragers in life. I would not have this degree without her vision and support.

Kathryn and I have been friends since we were 2 and 4 years old. She was 'the big girl's and I always admired her. Our parents were best friends and Kathryn and I were in charge whe The Mom's would go shopping and leave the 6 of us with The Dads. I don't think the dads even knew they were gone.
Kathryn and I remained friends for all these years.
Mom and I cannot believe she's gone.
Rest in Peace my long-time friend.

I am so deeply sorry for your loss. Dr. Pierce was my multiage teacher at Glenridge, and she meant so much to me. The bond she created in her classroom was special-every student felt her love the moment they walked through the door. I will always be grateful for the care, warmth, and presence she shared with us. Thank you for allowing us to be part of her life and legacy.
