Pawcatuck - Raul Ferreira, 85, Esteemed Entomologist and Devoted Family Man, Dies at Home.

Raul Ferreira, a distinguished entomologist, devoted husband, father, grandfather, and friend, died at his home in Pawcatuck, March 7, 2025. He was 85. Born April 18, 1939, in Avelar, Ansião, Portugal, Mr. Ferreira was the son of José Ferreira and Alice do Nascimento Medeiros.

He served with distinction in the Portuguese Army, where he built a remarkable career marked by dedication, leadership, and service to his country. Upon returning to Portugal, he re-enrolled at the University of Coimbra to complete his undergraduate degree. He went on to earn a master's degree in biology, specializing in entomology.

Though his professional path shifted after immigrating to the United States, leading him to a successful career in manufacturing-where he retired as a manufacturing manager at Secon Phoenix-his passion for entomology never waned. A recognized authority in his field, Mr. Ferreira continued to publish research and remained a sought-after resource for scholars and enthusiasts worldwide.

He is survived by his son, Joe and his wife Donna, along with their sons, Justin and Nicholas; and by his daughter, Maria and her husband Michael. He is also survived by numerous relatives who reside in Portugal.

He will be deeply missed by family, friends, and colleagues who cherished his intellect, warmth, and unwavering generosity.
