Stuart Greenfeld Obituary

Greenfeld, Stuart "Stu" Frank, passed away August 25th,2009. Stu was born December 6th, 1938 in New York City. His parents were Anna and Edward Greenfeld. He is lovingly survived by his wife, Aleesa of West Sacramento and daughter, Dr. Andrea Greenfeld, son in law Dr. John Anderson, granddaughter Juliet "Julsie" Emma, all of Palmer, Alaska and his daughter's mother, Joan Diamond. Also brother, Alan Greenfeld and his wife Judy, nephews, Ricky, Michael and wife, Cantor Judy, and Bob and wife, Victoria, great nephews and nieces, Samantha, David, Elijah and Marina Greenfeld, and many other loving family members and friends. Stu was born in the Bronx, NY but grew up in Ventura, CA. His family was one of the founding families of Temple Beth Torah and the long time proprietors of Ventura Furniture Mart on Main Street. Stu graduated from Ventura High School and Jr. College. After continuing his education at UCLA and UC Berkeley he interrupted his studies to serve a tour of duty in the U.S. Navy on the USS Coral Sea. Following his time in the service, he completed post-graduate work at the University of Calif. at Berkeley. Stu's passion was for the kids of California and fighting for "the little guy" and "what is right". He was a leading force in the field of education and spent a good part of his career with the California State Department of Education. He was especially proud of his achievements as the acting Superintendent of Schools in Coachella, California and most recently as Superintendent of Schools for the Washington Unified School District. After his retirement, Stu was elected trustee of the Yolo County Board of Education. For the last two years he has been president of the Yolo County School Board's Association. Stu was jokingly told that he was flunking retirement. Stu liked people and they liked him. He was involved as Post Commander of the Veterans of Foreign Wars, and the American Legion and was one of the original founders of the West Sacramento Neighbor Fair. For the past two years he enjoyed writing his column for the West Sacramento News Ledger. He also loved to ride his motorcycles with his friends and established the American Legion Riders for the region. One of his great pleasures was time at home with his wife, travel, and visits with his new granddaughter, Julsie. He was definitely a family man and always stayed in touch with his many cousins as well as close family. He had the "gift of gab" and one of his great pleasures was discovering peoples' stories and finding common connections. His wife lovingly said, "he was a man who knew no strangers". We will never forget his smile and the glimmer in his eyes. We have established a scholarship in Stu's name for deserving West Sacramento students. Please send donations to the West Sacramento Rotary Foundation-Stuart Greenfeld Memorial Scholarship, PO Box 288, West Sacramento, California 95691. Graveside services will be: Friday, August 28th at 2pm at Ivy Lawn Cemetery, Ventura California. A celebration of his life is being planned in the Sacramento Region at a later date. Stu will be terribly missed by not only family members, but his large group of friends who filled his heart with happiness throughout his life.

Dear Aleesa,

Stu was a terrfic man, and over the years we truly enjoyed the times we spent with both of you.

Andrea, while we've never met, your father always spoke of you with great pride and pleasure.

We know that you will both miss him terribly.

Please accept our deepest sympathy.

Although technically a cousin, we'll always remember Uncle Stu. He was loud and opinionated and we loved him for it. He was a great storyteller and his memory was long. I loved hearing stories of my parents -- the kind they probably wouldn't relate to me. We will miss him.

As a board member for Desert Sands Unified, I was privileged to get to know Stu during his stay in the valley. What a warm, intelligent, and generous man he was! He served CVUSD during a time when they could really benefit from someone with his leadership style, and he made a true difference in our valley. He will be missed.

Stu was a great leader. His dedication to Veterans, The American Legion and the Riders group was the sustaining force for many years. He is a true patriot and will be missed by all. His wit and camaraderie were an inspiration to all who knew him. The District 6 American Legion Riders offer heart-felt condolences to his wife and family for their loss. Mr. Greenfeld had a tremendous impact on the physical, not just the fiscal, "look" of our District. To those of us that weren't close to the office he held, he appeared to be a pretty intimidating man. I was lucky enough to have had several opportunities to see thru that. And, yes, Mr. Greenfeld, I still every now and then stop to smell the flowers!

Stuart was an asset to our Class of 1957 at Ventura High School. No matter our ages we never forget those days....as if they were yesterday. Such a priceless life he has lived. I'm enjoying learning so much about how he lived, especially from his buddies who grew up with him in Ventura, his schooling, his navy time, and his family. He's a person who lived a wonderful life, and shared himself with not only his beloved friends and family, but all the "strangers" he opened his heart to. Blessings to all. To Stu's family,

As Judi has said on behalf of the Class
of '57, Stu was, indeed, one of the really nice guys in our class. He was
also fun to be around. We had a lot of
good times at VHS. The Bible says that
God will give his people strength and
bless them with peace. That is my
prayer for you at this time.
God bless you,

Bob Tucker

Stu was my childhood friend and we spent many happy hours in his parents furniture store and roaming "old" Ventura. The world has lost a very special person and my thoughts and prayers are with Aleesa and his family.

Greenfeld family,
We... Ventura High School "Class of `57" are saddened by Stu's passing. He had quite a "presence" among his classmates, and will always be remembered as one of the really "nice" guys.
Some may always refer to him as Stuart Greenfield, rather than Greenfeld, just as we see the newspaper did as well. We wonder if he ever "just gave up" in correcting people. Either way, he's "our" Stu, and we'll miss him!
We send our condolences, hoping that the sadness of his passing, will soon become happy memories of having the good fortune of sharing your lives with such a wonderful man.
Love, from the "Class of `57"

All the good times, the wonderful memories, drinking whatever around a campfire, seeing who could make the strangest dish for a hunting camp ( Stu's Hungarian goulash) Our trip to Hawai in May. These are memories that Vickie and I will cherish .

I always felt I needed a nap after talking to Stu. We've been friends for over 30 years and I was often astonished when he updated me on his activities. And, there was usually a life changing event just coming up. I lived in anxiety waiting to hear the outcome of the new adventure. My condolences to Joan, also a friend, to the other members of his family, and Andy. Andy, you were the greatest joy in his life and our conversations always started with an update of your activities.

Aleesa,
This is a very nice write-up and a great picture of Stu. I feel like a light has gone out in the world. I'm thinking about you and hope you are well. If there is anything I can do to help you, please call! Big hug, Judy
