HUBERT BASCOM HOLMES, JR.

Hubert Bascom Holmes, Jr., an entrepreneur of many business interests, died on January 23, 2019 in Winston-Salem, North Carolina at 92 years of age.
Born in Columbus, Mississippi on September 29, 1926, he was the only child of Hubert Bascom Holmes, Sr. and Lucy Ferris Carter Holmes.
After graduating in 1944 from Lee High School, he enlisted during WWII in the V-5 Naval Air Corps Officer Training Program at Millsaps College in Jackson, Mississippi. After joining the Navy V-12 Officer's Training Program at the University of South Carolina in 1945, he graduated in 1948 with a B.S. in Naval Science and a B.S. in Electrical Engineering. He began work with Westinghouse Electric Corporation in Pittsburg, PA and then moved to the district sales office in New Orleans, LA.
With the outbreak of the Korean conflict, Hubert returned to active naval duty in April 1951, attended the Officer's Electronic School in San Francisco, and was assigned to a destroyer based in Charleston, SC. He was subsequently assigned to another destroyer for a tour of duty in the Sea of Japan and then around the world, and was honorably discharged in the spring of 1953 as a lieutenant. After his discharge from the Navy, Hubert joined Ethyl Corporation in Baton Rouge, LA as an Electrical Design Engineer and was later promoted to Project Engineer for new plant construction and expansion. In 1957 Hubert moved to Lakeland, Florida where he founded numerous companies and business ventures relating to the phosphate industries and telephone companies.
Hubert is survived by his wife of 53 plus years Margaret Lucas Holmes, his five children: Hubert III (Missy), Stephen, Courtney Douglas (Charles), Louie (Susan) and Stewart (Susan), and twelve grandchildren: Megan, Kelly and Connor Holmes; Kathryn and Jenna Holmes (their mother Sharon); Margaret and Thomas Douglas; Mixon and Victoria Holmes; and Stewart, Jr., Carter and Mary Price Holmes.
On Saturday, February 2nd, a memorial service will be held for the family. Afterward, at 4 pm, a reception will be held for friends and family at Piner Hall, Arbor Acres, 1240 Arbor Road, Winston-Salem, NC.
Interment will be at Friendship Cemetery, Columbus, Mississippi at a later date.
