GEORGE CUEVAS Obituary

GEORGE CUEVAS JR. McALLEN - George Cuevas Jr. 80, entered eternal rest Tuesday, November 18, 2014 surrounded by his loving family. While enlisted in the U.S. Army (Korea) he met and married the love of his life, Belia "Betty" Gonzalez and made their home in San Antonio, Texas. After his honorable discharge in 1955 he worked for Sears Roebuck as center manager of the auto department and in 1969 made the move to work as auto center manager for Montgomery Wards. The addition of a Montgomery Wards located at the new El Centro Mall in Pharr, TX brought him to the Rio Grande Valley to hire the personnel for the auto department. He decided to take a job transfer to manage the auto center and moved his family to McAllen in January 1972. Not long after, Betty opened Cuevas Restaurant #1 with great success and convinced him to quit and help her administrate the business. They were involved in many civic & political organizations while they owned and operated Cuevas Restaurants and Catering for almost 30 years until their retirement. They were married for almost 58 years until she preceded him in death on June 18, 2013. George was born in Kingsville, Texas to George Sr. and Josefina Cuevas. He is preceded in death by his parents; his brothers, Jose (Emilia+) Cuevas and Guadalupe (Julia) Cuevas; sisters, Maria de Trinidad (Trino+) Garza and Salome (Jose+) Guerra. He is survived by his daughters, Sylvia (Raul) Gallegos, Rosemarie (Eddie) Luna; his son Albert (Terry) Cuevas; eight grandchildren, Angela (Roel) Zuniga, Lisa Marie (Hugo) Garza, Nicholas (Anna) Gallegos, Dominique Gallegos, Danarae (Pete) Alvarez, Dusty Luna MD, Dustin Cuevas, Ashley Cuevas; two great grandchildren, OliviaRose Alvarez, Zachary Alexander Garza; His sisters, Bertha Martin (Harper+) and Maria de Jesus (Noe+) Ramirez. George loved to sing mariachi music. He had a beautiful voice and in the late 60's toured with Pedro Infante's brothers, Angel & Pepe Infante. He was a Eucharist minister and a caring, very devoted and loving husband who never left Betty's side during her times of sickness and protected her till the very end. A truly wonderful father who set fine examples such as praying before each meal, reading the bible and visiting church every day before work to pray. Visitation will be held 6 to 8 p.m. with a rosary at 7 p.m. Sunday, November 23, 2014 at Kreidler Funeral Home, Inc. in McAllen. A mass will be held at 12:30 p.m. Monday, November 24, 2014 at Holy Spirit Catholic Church in McAllen. Burial will follow at Rio Grande Valley State Veterans Cemetery in Mission. kreidlerfuneralhome.com Sign the guest book at www.themonitor.com/obituaries
