Your Dad was a great person and good to work with. He will be missed and remembered.

Cheryl, Ron, Michelle and Jon---We have so many memories of living next door to your family and having your dad as a teacher. Phil remembers being coached by your dad. He remembers Doug taught him how to tackle...he told Phil to run with the ball and Doug tackled him without pads! It was a lesson well learned as Phil became one of the leading tackelers on his team. Jon was like another brother to me because it seems like Matt and Jon were always together. We are sorry we were unable to make it to the funeral home, but know that our thoughts a prayers are with you and your families. --Phil and Polly Hoyt

Ron, Cheryl, Michelle, John,
Sorry to hear of your loss. He was a great man and will certainly be missed by many. He left quite a trademark in St Louis and inspired a lot of young lives over the years.

Mr. Steward was definitely a very big man but had a huge heart. He was my 8th Grade Girls Basketball Coach in 1988 which was the year he retired. I couldn't believe when we would practice that he would actually have us do football type workouts. Well, what he did certainly worked as we were undefeated that year. I'll never forget we played against Breckenridge and it was so close. We went back and forth and we won by two points. Couch Steward actually picked up one of our girls because he was so excited we won. What a priceless moment that I will never forget! My dad was friends with him and now that I have grown I would actually get the chance to see him every now and then and he for sure does have that special smile and wink that makes you feel like the most important person in the room. It takes you back to being a kid at St. Louis. Go Sharks! We will never forget you! You are and will always be a legend in my mind! Prayers and thoughts to the family.

Every once in awhile a person has touched your life in many ways! He was just a wonderful man, compassionate, tough love, Lombardi like coaching, yet a heart as big as his large frame. I still think about him often and I know he was proud of his children and grandchildren. I am a lucky man to know that he touched my life as a coach, and a teacher. I will remember him forever!

Thank you Mr. Steward for memories of St. Louis and St. Louis High School as a basketball town and place in the 1960s and 1970s. I appreciate memories of going to a game as a kid, watching great teams play and for letting me play on a team.

I send the family my condolences and prayers. Some of my fondest memories are playing basketball for your dad and having him as a coach. I would run into him years later and he would always have a handshake and a smile at the ready. He made such a contribution to the community during his life. He will surely be missed.

When I was a young boy, a man named Mr. Steward, in several ways seemed bigger than life to me. For starters, he was 6'8 tall, and he was the local high school's boys varsity basketball coach. As a 9-year old boy, it seemed like the guys playing varsity sports were celebrities, and I dreamed of one day playing on Coach Steward's team. By 4th grade, this important local figure knew who I was, and whenever he saw me, he would give me positive attention. As I started growing taller, Coach Steward would walk past me, stops and straighten his back, encouraging me to pay attention to my posture. What really made me feel important was when he would look at me with a reassuring smile, turn his lower lip out and wink at me. That made me feel confident, important, and inspired me to work hard on achieving my dream. When I reached high school, I realized that childhood dream and played 3 years on his varsity team.
I had only seen Coach Steward a few times after leaving home in St. Louis. A couple of years ago I was surprised when I attended the MSU Vs. Wisconsin football game in East Lansing. As we were walking to our seats, I saw Coach Steward sitting along the aisle next to his son Ron. Coach was wearing a Wisconsin jersey. I stopped and talked to my former coach and learned that his grandson was a 6'8 tall lineman playing for Wisconsin. We left towards the end of the game, and I stopped to say goodbye to my former basketball Coach. As I walked away, I turned back and smiled at Coach. What happened next took me by surprise. Coach gave me the same reassuring smile he had when I was young, where he turned his lower lip out just a tad, and he the winked at me. I have to say, that after more than three decades in my business career and a lot of positive recognition, this small act struck the same chord as when I was a 9-year old. For a few moments, that same attention that Coach showed me made me feel a bit more reassured and more important. What a special feeling! Besides causing me to reflect on my childhood and appreciate the role that Coach Steward played in my development, it made me reflect on the opportunities that I have to reassure people, and make them feel just a little more important as a result of their interaction with me.
Thanks Coach..rest in peace!
My condolences to the family.

From Bob Miles I look at Doug as being one of my best friends for the past 60 years. We first met at Kalamazoo College on the football field and stayed in contact after our college days. We had a group of coaches made up of Jack Warner, Norm Johnson, Pete Bishop, Ron Lude, Doug Steward and Bob Miles that would get-to-gether four or five times a year to enjoy each others company. The highlight of our meetings was at the Sages when Doug would cook steaks purchased from a market in St. Louis ( these steaks were graded each year) on his family grill that was transported from St. Louis in the back of his truck.
