PAULA SPILMAN Obituary

Paula Grace Spilman was born 9:10 a.m. on Oct. 17, 1957 at Prince George's General Hospital, Cheverly, Md., to parents Gerald & Gloria (Vale) Mitchell. She was a loving sister to siblings, Craig, Andrew, Marianne, Christopher and Eleanor.

Paula found her great love, Wayne, at St. Margarets Elementary "in pre-school", as Wayne said. After graduating high school as salutatorian from La Reine Catholic High School in Washington, D.C., they were wed at the age of 18, foregoing secondary education to set up house and become caretakers to siblings.

Shortly into marriage, she and Wayne started their family, and she became a mother. Matthew Landon, Janelle Celeste, Carolyn Ann, Mark Anthony and Christian Patrick would become their whole lives. She was a champion Mom, celebrating the diverse interests of five children.

When her youngest was old enough, she started work. She served as a part-time assistant to pre-school at St. Francis school in Clearfield, a natural fit after many years of support in various fundraising and volunteering efforts there. She would build many lasting friendships within the community that remain today.

When extra income became a need for her growing family, she took on a role with the Penn State Cooperative Extension - helping children and underprivileged families learn how to eat, nourish and grow plants.

Her yearning to learn never ended, as her work evolved and she took a position as activities coordinator with Ridgeview Elder Care in Grampian. She earned her way to a supervisory role and spent nearly 15 years caring for residents, entertaining them and honing her skills in dementia and Alzheimer's care. She was an integral part of forming a first ever "snoozilin' room" - offering sensory support to dementia patients.

In 2016 when her husband passed, she brought herself closer to home, taking a post as activities coordinator for DuBois Village Continuum of Care Community. Her love of resident care was as contagious as ever and improved the quality of life for many, extending into the greater community.

She spent her life loving, giving, caring, sharing, learning and growing. She welcomed two new daughters-in-law, Robin (Brown) Spilman and Kaitlyn (Fitzgerald) Spilman, and one son-in-law, Steven Affeltranger. She would be blessed to become "Nonni", her chosen moniker, to her grandchildren, Gideon, Campbell, Avery and Hattie. She worshipped this role, and they worshipped her, as she lived for FaceTime calls and trips to Texas to visit and play with them.

She loved her free time in the garden, walking the dog, pruning plants and tending her roses. She also loved her morning coffee ritual, a past time shared with Wayne, and watching the birds visit in her new windows, on continual lookout for those stunning cardinals. She always found pleasure in the small things - humble and gracious, she would under estimate her worth to all living things. She was and shall remain one of the most passionate, selfless human beings to ever walk the planet.

There will be no public visitation.

A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated on Monday, Jan. 10, 2022 at 10 a.m. from St. Francis Roman Catholic Church in Clearfield with Fr. Brandon Kleckner as celebrant.

I still miss her, especially when I visit at Ridgeview. She was truly the spark of fun, companionship and sincere caring for all the folks there- residents and staff. The world needs more like her.

I first met Paula when she welcomed me and my family to St Francis Church in 1994. She was such a warm and caring person. We spent many years at basketball games at St Francis and later at Central. I hired Paula at Ridgeview and she touched more lives that will ever truly be known; from providing activities for our elders to changing sheets, cleaning floors and sitting with many who were dying so they wouldn´t be alone. She spent many hours, on her own time, offering compassion, empathy and listening, sometimes to the same stories day after day, with the same intense focus as if she heard it for the first time. She is loved and missed.

Paula and I went to grade school together at St. Margaret's Elementary. In second grade, I took ill right before our First Holy Communion and was so disappointed to miss that very special event with my class. When I was better, Paula dressed up in her white communion dress and received "first" communion with me a few weeks later, with Father Gude presiding. I don't know who arranged it, but it was such a special memory always that she did that for me. That is the kind of person she was. May many memories like this sustain your family at this time. With sympathy and prayers.

My dear cousin Paula Gracia mom called you. Always in my heart. I will cherish the good times and memories we had growing up. You were always the puzzle master. Family get togethers Christmas parties and just good ole visiting, picnics. I could go on and on. I will miss our conversations. And you were the best letter writer ever!
So glad we got to dance at Sherri and Jeffs wedding. It was the best.
My deepest sympathy to all of your family.

How fortunate we were to have Paula as a classmate at LaReine. Her leadership skills, care & compassion for others, her devotion to her family & her love for all were more than evident back then. The smart & accomplished Paula Grace that we knew in high school was just a snapshot of who she became once we graduated. A caregiver, wife, mother extraordinaire & champion of everything she was involved in, are just a few of her attributes.
She leaves her children & grandchildren with a legacy of grace & faith & the deepest love for each of them. Her life was lived to the fullest & her family, friends & everyone she touched in her work are proof of that.
My dear friend, you will be missed. But we thank you for being yet another angel in heaven looking over each of us.
God Bless the Mitchell & Spilman families at this time of loss & grief.

The La Reine High School Class of 1975 will always remember our very capable class leader and classmate. The last time I spoke to Paula was 2014 or close to our class reunion 2015. A good conversation but instead of attending due to her husband's health, she sent her good wishes for our class reunion. To the Mitchell and Spilman families, I'm sorry for your loss. You have our deepest sympathy. Rest in peace Paula
