I've known for a time that David was going to leave us. I worked for David for over ten years at the LWTM law firm and loved every minute of it. He became my mentor and gave me the confidence in myself that I had lost over the years before knowing him. I pray for the entire family for the peace and love they need right now. David will always be in my heart and even though I knew it was coming, I wasn't ready to accept it when it happened. David was the finest person I've ever known and he will be truly missed by so many. Take heart in what he gave us and do our best to follow his examples. He taught me to belly laugh at least once a day and in his honor, I will try. Judy Varley

I too am saddened by the loss of David.. He was a classmate at Bishopville High School.. He was always one of the nicest persons to be around, very humble and also one of the most talented in our class. I was always sure that whatever he aspired to become he would do just that... He starred in one of the Operettas in our school...Always excelled in speaking... and singing!! And of course, he was an outstanding athlete. My condolences to all his family. I consider it an honor to have known him. Sincerely, Esther Singleton

"Mr Quattlebaum was my "american dad". Summer of 1978 I travelled from Sweden to USA to become an exchange counsellor at Camp Greenville. I was 18 and never been outside Europe. I met David J. Quattlebaum at camp, and we became best friends. Shortly thereafter he took me to his parents house on Parkins Mill, to meet with them. Of course I fell in love with them. The love and warmth from that family was enormous. Mr Quattlebaum immediately became a person I looked up to. He loved to ask about Sweden, my parents, our life. Never forget one of the first nights in their house, when he cooked burgers and we watched Yankees. Never had a burger and never seen a ball game before. 10 years later, when I had the opportunity to work in the US for a year, Mr Quattlebaum again showed his warm heart by helping me get comfortable. I have read all the wonderful pieces of memories about him, here on this page. Some things were new to me, some I knew about. But the stories solidify the memories of the person I cherish so much, the witty warm father and friend of mine, for over 40 years. Thanks, Mr Quattlebaum, for letting me be your friend. I am forever thankful. Claes Elefalk, Stockholm, Sweden.

Mr.Quattlebaum,he will all be Mr Quattlebaum because of the respect I have for the way he handled himself in all aspects of his life. How fortunate we all were to have such a positive role model to guide us thru our high school years.

David was such a fine man and father. I was fortunate enough to have grown up under his watch and considered him an advisor and friend. He treated all of his children's friends with fair consideration, and honesty. His Quattlebaum sense of humor was legendary with the next generation. I looked up to him always. My thoughts and prayers go out to Mary Jane, Derrick and all the family.

David was an incredibly able and gifted advisor and personable friend, whether known well by some for many years, or more in my case, through casual and periodic encounters in recent years while serving together in Montreat. We shared a number of "war stories" over time from the legal practice, and he was a great storyteller! I will miss the way he could light up the room each time I knew I would get to spend a little more time enjoying his company. I wish much love and God's peace to Mary Jane and the family. My heart goes out to Mary Jane and David's family. When I joined Leatherwood as an associate attorney in 1998, Mr. Quattlebaum was already long since a legend in the legal community of South Carolina. My former firm, McCutchen, Blanton, Rhodes & Johnson revered both the Leatherwood firm and David particularly. As a brand new associate, being called to his office was extremely stressful. We knew we were in the presence of a great legal mind, a pillar of the community, and a former managing partner. However, no matter the legal issue or the related circumstances, David was kind, open to one's ideas, and enthusiastic about our research and conclusions. He and Mary Jane were always so gracious at social gatherings. I wish that I had known him better socially. But for those of us who knew him professionally, I cannot imagine a better role model in our beloved profession. I am sorry that we all have lost him. I am more sorry for his family's loss. David was a Giant. May we all remember the Giants in this Life.
