Robert Quinn Obituary

Capt. Robert J. Quinn Jr. USN (Ret.), age 73, passed away on Jan. 27, 2016. He was born in Scranton, Pa., in 1942, the oldest of six children, to the late Robert and Dorothy Quinn.

Bob grew up playing baseball, caddying at the golf course and graduated from Central High School. After graduating from the University of Scranton, he was commissioned an ensign in the Navy, and was soon after designated a naval aviator. He flew patrol aircraft in numerous theaters of operation, including SE Asia, the Western Pacific, Indian Ocean and the North Atlantic, and served as commanding officer of Patrol Squadron 9. He also received his master's in finance and taught economics at the U.S. Naval Academy. He finished a distinguished 26-year career with tours at the Pentagon, Supreme Allied Cmdr. Atlantic, and the Philadelphia Shipyard. After retiring from the Navy, he worked for the United Nations, establishing peacekeeping operations in some of the most volatile countries on Earth. He retired (again) in 2005 to enjoy his home and family in Virginia Beach, rekindled his love of golf, and was the 2013 Red Wing Seniors Club champion.

Bob was preceded in death by a brother, Cpl. James Quinn; and leaves behind his devoted wife of 50 years, Carol; his children, Tracey, Robert, Erin and Ryan (wife, Heather); six grandchildren; his sisters, Marianne Kester, Pat Moffa, Dorothy Quinn; and a brother, Tom Quinn.

A private memorial service will be held in remembrance of his unwavering dedication to family and country. Online condolences may be made to the family at hdoliver.com.

Bob and I worked together in UN Peacekeeping both during the war in Yugoslavia and the peace in East Timor. Whenever I was in New York, during his time at UN Headquarters, Bob was one of the first people I looked up for a few beers in his local, Donoghue's.

As a colleague Bob was one of those people who was able to stand firm in difficult situations without losing the respect of those who may not have agreed with him. As a friend Bob was loyal and generous and a great person to spend time with.

I only recently got to know of his passing (a few months late) and I hope his dear wife and family will accept my heartfelt condolences, however late they may be. I will be raising a glass or two to Bob Quinn tonight in England. Cheers.
