Carol Dunsing Obituary

Carol Dunsing

September 1, 1932 - June 24, 2025

The relentlessly happy and optimistic Carol Jean Dunsing went to be with the Lord on June 24, 2025. She was born September 1, 1932 in Chicago, Illinois to her beloved daddy, Delton Waby and regal mother, Florence Waby.

Her husband, Richard "Dick" Dunsing, will always cherish 75 years of memories with his "sweetie". She taught her four children, Steve Dunsing (Mary), Susan Ashby (Frank), Sharon Dunsing (Carol), and Sandi Dunkum (Jim) to choose joy, bloom where they are planted and know that blue skies are always ahead. She was the biggest cheerleader to her five grandkids, Megan Gill (Jeffrey), Frank Ashby (Alyssa), Caroline Ashby, Austin Traylor (Brandon), and Delton Dunkum (Sammy). She had the ability to celebrate the unique characteristics of all of her grandchildren while always reminding them that "We Are Family".

A midwesterner at heart, she met the love of her life at Knox College, waited for him to return from the Army abroad, and married him in 1955. They later moved their family to Richmond, Virginia where she was a stay at home mom for many years. She then began teaching at her happy place, Godwin High School, where she made an impact on an endless number of English students. She and Dick loved traveling the world together and also shared that passion with their kids and grandkids by including them on many fabulous vacations. Despite enjoying many adventurous trips, the family favorite remains their annual trip to Sandbridge. A highlight in her later years was meeting her five great grandsons: Quint and Mason Ashby, Stetson and Gus Traylor, and Jeffrey Gill III.

A celebration of life will be held at Lakewood Retirement Community in the auditorium Sunday, June 29 at 2:00 p.m. Please arrive to celebrate her beautiful life in her favorite color, red. In lieu of flowers, we ask for donations in Carol's memory to Discovery United Methodist Church.

Carol had a smile that lit up every room. She taught me how to make pulled pork and day after Thanksgiving "mushy turkey". Over the years when Dick had me visit to teach at U of R we shared laughs over a Manhattan or a glass of wine. Carol wouldn´t want us to shed a tear. I´m sorry my dear friend for now the space you have left in our lives will be filled with tears. Until the cherished memories and happy times push them aside.

"Sweetie" you were one of a kind. The most patient human on this earth with dealing with all the irritations of aging. Supportive with Dick and his shenanigans! Loved by all. I had the pleasure of watching and caring for Carol and Dick for over 7 years as their Primary Care Provider in their aging years. I loved these two humans more than I can express and their love for me was always apparent and without doubt! One of the most difficult decisions they had to make was to move to assisted living and leave my care. Her wisdom, will always be my compass to do what´s right when no one is watching. Praying for peace and comfort to the Dunsing family during this difficult time. Love you all, Jennifer Hauser

I worked with Sandi in the summer of 1984 at Camp Hanover. Carol allowed me to stay in the family house during summer break and after camp ended for the summer. I will always remember her kindness. Best wishes to Sandi and the family x

Carol was a gift to Godwin High School. She loved her freshmen and had the patience of Job with them!
The ladies-of-the-round-table in the English department shared their lives, and Carol was always our voice of reason. She and I often gave each other rides to school when we experienced car trouble, and as I drove ( quickly) up Patterson Ave. she would quietly say, " Mary, enjoy the journey." She wanted me to slow down, but she gave me a phrase to remember all my life. As I have faced my challenges , Carol Dunsing´s advice to "enjoy the journey" has
been the voice in my head. She lived what she believed , and certainly enjoyed her journey through life with her loved ones. She will be remembered forever . Mary Bruner

Carol started me on my English journey. I will forever remember her in English 9 at Godwin HS. Now, after teaching 33 years and a retired English teacher, I know she touched countless lives. I was one of them. Thank you, Mrs. Dunsing.

My heart is heavy. Carol was a friend, mentor, inspiration, a joy to be with. I cherish the hours we spent walking the track at Godwin during our 24 minute lunch breaks. Her guidance and advice for me in my roles as wife, mother, teacher and friend have stood me in good stead for many years. A light has left the world.
