Gene VINCENT Obituary

VINCENT, Gene Thomas Jr. "Tom," 72, died on July 5, 2012, surrounded by his family. The son of the late Gene T. and Katherine H. Vincent, Tom grew up in Emporia, Va. Tom is survived by his wife, Harriet McGavock Vincent; his son, Richard L. Vincent (wife, Sarah); daughter, Lisa Page V. Carter (husband, Jerry); grandchildren, Hannah and Jack Vincent and Russell, Douglas, and Avery Carter; and his sisters, Katherine V. Wynn and Beverly V. Bernard. After graduating from Ferrum College and attending Lynchburg College, Tom worked in Richmond at the Division of Motor Vehicles and later retired as a supervising auditor for the Virginia Department of Taxation.

Tom was a member of St. Matthew's Episcopal Church, where he was an active participant in the choir and in several Bible study groups. He enjoyed playing tennis for many years, carving animals out of walnut wood, attending the Richmond Symphony, and traveling in Europe, Japan and Alaska. In recent years, he took part in the Parkinson's exercise class at the John Rolfe YMCA, where the camaraderie was as important to him as the excellent instruction. Tom's family are thankful for the compassion and care of their church family, childhood friends and new-found friends, Senior Solutions, Spring Arbor of Salisbury, and Horizon's Hospice. A memorial service will take place at St. Matthew's Episcopal Church at 1101 Forest Ave. at 10:30 a.m. Tuesday, July 10. In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made to St. Matthew's Endowment Fund or to the Parkinson's & Movement Disorder Center at P.O. Box 980539, Richmond, Va. 23298.

I coached Lisa Page in basketball during her high school days at St. Catherine's School. Mr. Vincent (Tom) was always so supportive of me and our team. Win or lose, he was always there to say "good job". He was a kind soul, a wonderful father and a loving husband to Harriet.

Harriet,
God bless you and the family. I was certainly taken aback today and have been fondly remembering the great stories my Dad would share through the years that he'd had with Tommy, and all the cousins, while growing up in Emporia. We always loved being able to see you at the family reunions, in the Saffelle's back yard. I am hoping to be there on Tuesday, and I have everyone in my prayers. Love, to all of you.

Tom will be missed by his neighbors. Many became his friends. He always had a pleasant word and we enjoyed watching him ride his bicycle throughout the neighborhood.
