James Atkinson Obituary

ATKINSON, James "Jim" Harold, born June 20, 1924, passed February 7, 2021. When you think of Jim, you picture family and golf; he had great love and passion for both. Born in Richmond, Jim graduated early from the University of Richmond and went on to serve in the Navy, where he deployed to the Pacific during WWII. Returning home, he married his love, Kitty, and they started their family together. Jim was a Project Manager for multiple construction and architectural firms in Richmond until he retired. He designed and built his family's home that they filled with love for more than 65 years. Next to family, Jim's second passion was golf and he played often and well until he was 93, always walking the course and consistently shooting his age or better. All who knew him will miss his big heart, dry wit and love of a good puzzle…daydayout. Jim was preceded in death by his parents, Nancy and Temple Atkinson; and brothers, Wilton and Russell. He is survived by his wife of 74 years, Katherine "Kitty" Hardiman Atkinson; daughters, Kathy Love (David), Debbie Cantalupo (Frank), Barbra Björkholm (Tom) and Lynne Douglas (Tom); seven grandchildren, six great-grandchildren and one great-great-grandchild. Memorial services will be held at a later date (TBD).

I never enjoyed playing golf more than when I was playing with Jim and was fortunate to have had that privilege many, many times over the past 20 years. He was a blessing to all who knew him.
