Robert Mayhue Obituary

KINGSTON — Mr. Robert Darrell Mayhue, 68, a resident of Kingston and Fort Myers, Florida, passed into eternal life Tuesday, Sept. 17, 2019, in the care of the Wilkes-Barre General Hospital.

Born May 8, 1951, in Huntingdon, he was the son of the late Verna A. Mayhue.

Darrell, as he was known to those who knew and loved him, was a graduate of Key West High School in Key West, Florida. He furthered his education by attending the University of Colorado, Boulder, with studies in architectural engineering.

He applied this knowledge to his life's vocation by working on various projects of all sizes throughout the United States.

Locally, many people remember him as the drummer for the popular 1970s band, "Redeye."

In his spare time, Darrell loved riding his Harleys. He also truly loved traveling the world with Louise. Together, the couple had visited many countries, including Namibia, China, India, Egypt, Brazil and Tanzania.

He was a lover of animals, especially his faithful companions, his dogs, Sooner and Later, along with the cats Simba and Blanco.

Darrell is remembered for his outgoing personality and unique sense of humor. He will be greatly missed by all those he touched in this life.

Left to cherish the wonderful memories they shared together are his longtime partner, Louise C. Wassil; a brother, Charles Mayhue, of York; and several cousins, nieces, nephews and dear friends.

Memorial funeral services for Darrell will be conducted on Monday evening with a celebration of his life at 7:30 p.m. from the North Wilkes-Barre location of the John V. Morris Family Funeral Homes Inc., 625 N. Main St.

Relatives and friends may join Louise and her family for visitation and shared remembrances from 6 p.m. until the time of services Monday evening.

Private inurnment will be next to his mother in St. Mary's Roman Catholic Cemetery, 1594 S. Main St., Hanover Township.

Louise would be humbled if those wishing to send a monetary contribution in Darrell's memory kindly do so to a charity having special meaning to the donor.

Dear Louise and the Mayhue family. So sorry to hear that Darrell has passed away. He was my neighbor, my Harley riding buddy, my client, but most of ALL he was my friend. I remember all the times my brother Lou and best friend Mike Dogal went to see Redeye play, Tipper, Nedber, and Darrell at the Hearthstone Pub, Foothills, Broadway Tavern, Kilgore Trout and
many many other venues. Hotel Sterling New Years Eve bash!! What times and memories we have to cherish. Rest in Peace my dear Friend. "GHOST RIDERS IN THE SKY"!!

I first jammed with Darrell in the early 70's. I have to say that he was such an intense drummer he scared me a bit. It didn't take long and we just clicked. Over the years we played hundreds of shows and had countless adventures. Most of which were Darrell's ideas with me tagging along. Like in the winter when he would pick me up in the middle of the night in his VW beetle and we would drive to Elk mountain to get there before the workers so he could drive halfway up the slope and park at the maintenance building . Then we would ski for free all day until someone caught us. It worked great until they got wise and blocked him in with 2 snow grooming machines. Darrell said no problem, headed to the lodge and came back with 8 big college guys who picked up his beetle and carried it out to the road so we could get home and get ready for the show that night. I have so many memories like that I could fill a book. Those are the kinds of things I think about whenever Darrell's name comes up. We just ran into him a week or so ago and he looked great. It's hard to believe how things can change in an instant. If you needed a hand Darrell was always there. He was a character as well as a really good guy.

Back in the day listening to really great live music is what we all did. We met Darrell in the early 70's. Watching him on stage was always a treat. He was a powerhouse drummer who broke more cymbals than sticks!
Whenever we hear a Skynyrd tune we will always think of Darrell.
We will miss him.

I remember Darrell from the "Redeye" days. Still have a picture of him sitting in my race car at Kirby Park. He was truly a free spirit in the very best meaning of the term.
"'Cause they've got to ride forever on that range up in the sky
On Harleys snorting fire
As they ride on hear their cry"
Happy trails, Darrell.

I've known Darrell since I was two. We grew up a few houses apart. I recently moved to the Fort Myers area and been googling him to find his number I wanted to surprise him so I was shocked to see him in the paper today. I don't know if I grew up in my house or his when I think back. I guess he's eating Grandmas cookies hanging out with Mudrick and Chris arguing with mom and aunt Vern. I hope there's a drum set there. R.I.P. my brother WHOOP, WHOOP!
