Eugene Schuler Obituary

Schuler, Eugene Kieran Jr. KINDERHOOK A kind and gentle soul has left us. Eugene "Gene" Kieran Schuler died peacefully at home in Kinderhook, on April 17, 2013 after a courageous struggle with cancer. Gene was a loving and generous husband, father, friend, and mentor who lived the words of Micah, "Do justice. Love kindness. Walk humbly." Born in Allentown, Pa., on March 23, 1947, Gene was the son of the late Eugene and Eleanor Schuler. After graduation from the University of Notre Dame, he trained as a Naval air pilot. A VISTA volunteer in West Virginia in 1971 to 1972, Gene worked passionately for the rights of miners with black lung disease and on eminent domain rights. With a degree from the Graduate School of Public Affairs at UAlbany, Gene held various positions in the Capital Region, including with the Greene County planning department, the UAlbany School of Social Welfare; Research Foundation director of technology transfer; UAlbany assistant vice president for research and director, technology development; CAO of Ordway Research Institute; and executive director, Lighting Cultivator, Inc. He enjoyed mentoring as an adjunct professor at Albany Law School. In 2012, Gene was presented with the national Bayh-Doyle Award by the Association of University Technology Managers (AUTM). Through the years, Gene gave his time and talents to many organizations, including Catholic Charities, Pyramid Life Center, Rensselaer County Regional Chamber of Commerce, Center for Economic Growth, Community Loan Fund, Habitat for Humanity, Village of Kinderhook, Valatie Santa Claus Club, St. John the Baptist Church, Ichabod Crane Regional Food Pantry, and the Capital area Huntington's Disease affiliate. Gene loved all things Irish, Notre Dame, the Adirondacks, canoe trips, traveling the world, Christmas, daffodils, lilacs, forsythia, biotechnology, good mysteries, feeding birds, gardening, and being with his nephew, Max. He treasured his time with friends around the world, especially his Pyramid Life Center friends. His sense of humor, appreciation of great jokes, kindness and compassion were well-known. Gene will be deeply missed by those whose lives he touched, especially Pat, his wife of 41 years, and Jenn, his amazing daughter. He is also survived by his brother, John (MaryLou); brothers-in-law, James Pitzvada and John (Joanne) Pitfido; sisters-in-law, Chris Loscavio, Mary Harrigan (Chuck), and Barbara Pitfido (John); and many cousins, nieces, and nephews. He was predeased by his brother, Philip. The family wishes to thank the staffs of the Dana-Farber Cancer Insitute, Brigham and Women's Hospital, NYOH Patroon Creek and Columbia-Greene Hospice for helping this wonderful man leave our presence with grace and dignity. A celebration of Gene's life will be held from 4 to 7 p.m. on April 21, 2013 at Magin & Keegan Funeral Home, 891 Madison Ave., Albany. Dear Pat and Jen,
I was very sorry to learn of Gene's passing. He was a very humble, kind human being and the world will miss his wisdom and wit. Be strong and carry on his good work as he would want you to do.
I wish that I could take you in my arms and hold you close so we could comfort each other. I value the time I was able to spend with both of you at U-Conn, at conferences, and in the peacefulness of our neighboring living quarters.
In sympathy,
Nancy Lashaway-Bokina

Dear Pat. It is with great sadness that I have just learned of Gene's passing. Although we lost touch over the past few years I recall his leadership and friendship during our mutual time on the UAlbany's East Campus. Gene was a special individual whose life touched so many of us.

Gene's love of the village has and will be missed. It was a pleasure to be a merchant with him as a costumer. He was willing to walk the talk . Buy local. God has a better village for you, and lots more miles for you to walk in the heavens.

My heartfelt sympathy to Pat and Jen. I worked with Gene through AUTM many years ago and it was a great privilege and honor to do so. It was last March, 2012 that we had the opportunity to meet again at the AUTM Annual Meeting at which Gene was honored by receiving the Bayh-Dole Award, and so well deserved. He will be truly missed by his family, friends and colleagues.

Pat, Jenn and the Schuler Family:

My condolences on the loss of your beloved husband and father.

Gene and I were, in the late 1970s, fellow graduate students at S.U.N.Y., Albany's Graduate School of Public Affairs (now Rockefeller College). We both worked together and with others on some course projects. Remember Gene as a person of towering intellect and vast knowledge. A memorable set of experiences.

We were able to establish an immediate rapport when I told him that I was a student at LeMoyne College, Syracuse, N.Y. from 1967-69. Immediately telling me of his marriage to you Pat. As you were a student at LeMoyne College at the same time.

Every so often, thereafter, we would encounter one another in the many and varied environs of N.Y.S. Government. Always in a jovial and congenial way.

Happy memories!

Your feelings of sadness and loss must be overwhelming. May your period of bereavement and grief be, mercifully, short.

May all of your happy memories of Gene served to comfort you.

God bless you all.

Genie Schuler, my cousin, was the son of my father's youngest brother. At one time the Schuler family was large with cousins, aunts, & uncles, as well as great uncles & great aunts. Trying to stay in touch was something Genie was very good at. He carried the torch of "staying in touch." It seems unreal not to know he'd be popping in some day no matter where we lived. Thanks to the USAF we lived in some strange places. It didn't even slow him down.
God speed Genie. I love you.I will miss you.

I will miss Gene greatly. He was not only my work colleague but he mentored me and quickly became a close friend. We shared many ideas and goals and I will miss his stories about his (mis)adventures in the Adirondacks.
